With Big Brother in Kindergarten, we’ve been immersed in all things “learning to read” this year. Lots of family reading, sight words, letter sound practice and more! So, I wanted to share a great resource from my blogging friend, Jenae at I Can Teach My Child…Jenae, a former elementary teacher, is passionate about helping everyone be their child’s first teacher! Her blog is awesome and now she’s launched a brand-new eBook titled I Can Teach My Child to Read: A 10-Step Guide for Parents. During this launch week (through Saturday, January 12th), the eBook is being offered at half-off for just $1.99 as a pdf or Kindle version
.
I had the pleasure of checking out the ebook before it launched and think it’s a great resource for parents of young preschoolers to young elementary students. Within the ebook you’ll find:
- A balanced approach towards reading with comprehension and enjoyment as the ultimate goal.
- Tips for teaching your child to identify the letters of the alphabet within his/her environment.
- Activities that promote literacy while incorporating multiple senses and areas of development.
- Comprehension strategies that ensure your child is remembering and retaining what he/she has read.
- Simple phonemic awareness activities that you can easily incorporate into your daily routine.
- The necessity for teaching phonics and sight words.
- Decoding strategies that will engage your child.
- Tips on choosing “just right” books for your child to read independently.
In addition to all of that, you’ll find a whole list of resources included, like common sight words lists and various links to additional resources. Some of it were things I already knew or was already doing, but I definitely picked up a few more tips, resources, and ideas! I especially love the book list ideas and tips on choosing books for Big Brother to read independently. Since he’s our oldest, we’ve never been down this “learning to read” road before, so I’m feeling like I can use all the help I can get! Being a mom of all boys (like Jenae), I know that school can sometimes be set up “against” boys. I want mine to love school and love reading. So, it’s great to have an ebook from another mom and educator who wants the same for her boys!

Happy Reading! 😉
Disclosure: I received a copy of the ebook prior to the launch date, but all opinions are entirely my own. I’ve been following Jenae’s blog for a long time and wanted to share her awesome new resource with you. *Note: this post does contain affiliate links.
