Have you seen HEXBUG Micro Robotic Creatures?
These toys are AWESOME! Engineering meets biology, making sci-fi like toys that are PERFECT for boys! They certainly resemble bugs in appearance, but where they get particularly buggy is in their movements. Seriously, JUST like real bugs! The little nanos (seen in the above picture) move in a way that seems a cross between cockroach and scorpion! 🙂 And, the effect in the dark with their “glow-in-the-dark” exoskeleton backs looks SUPER cool (and also reminiscent of our desert scorpions under black light). Here’s a little footage of our nanos playing in one of their habitats.
Pretty cool, huh?! So, needless to say, when I was asked to host a #HEXBUGHalloween party, we absolutely said yes. And, instead of something for just the kiddos, we decided to make it a Friday night party for a bunch of our friends! 🙂 We added a few decorations since the Halloween playdate–especially since we just got my grandparents’ piano the night before the party! So, the piano got decorated with our fun light-up spider, we added a spider wreath & spooky tree to the front walk, a spider web on the tile in the front entry way (that the adorable baby is playing with a HEXBUG larva on), and lots of bats (cut from cardstock) on the walls, windows, and tables! Then, of course, we had to have a whole table displaying the awesome Hexbugs! 🙂 The Zombie Bugs really added to the Halloween feel!
And, how cool is this?! Knowing the theme of the party, one of our friends came over decked out with “bug hair”!!! Notice the HEXBUG in there?! Sooo clever!
For food, we decided to make it a Halloween themed pot-luck and ended up with TONS of spooktacular eats (and that picture doesn’t even show all of it!)!!
There were worms in the mud, worms on a bun, deviled eyeballs, caramel corn, popcorn balls, a candy corn kitkat cake, a haunted graveyard cake, spider & bat pasta bake, plus the spider cheeseball and other fun black olive creations!
We even made the bubbling swamp slime really bubbly with some dry ice! The kids got SUCH a kick out of it!
After dinner, it was HEXBUG time!!!! The kids were SO excited to choose a Nano and Zombie bug!
Then, they got to try them out on the tracks!!!
Everyone thought they were SO cool–especially when we turned out the lights to see the bugs and track glowing in the dark (I tried getting pictures of that, but just couldn’t get my camera to focus in it in the dark). It sure was fun though! The kiddos played and played and played! The only issue was the exoskeleton kept popping off the Zombie bugs, which some were frustrated with (and could potentially pose an issue for the little babies around putting things into their mouths). So that was a bummer! But, other than that, the little HEXBUG creatures were a BIG hit!! 🙂 The boys didn’t want to stop playing even after the party was over!
Want to try them for yourselves? Or, maybe get a great gift for a little guy ages 3+? (they would make excellent Christmas presents and the Nanos would be GREAT stocking stuffers!) Well, here’s a chance to snag some for FREE!!!!!

roaches give me the creeps, especially the ones that fly!
Crickets and Scorpions really gross me out. Both of them are very common where I live.
