For our Halloween party playdate last year, we did different crafts & activities with the kids. My friend brought over the cutest handprint spiders & webs made from paper plates. But sadly, we ran out of time to make them then!
I’m such a sucker for handprint crafts though that I filed the idea away in my brain and we did it this year as a little afternoon activity with the big boys! They LOVED it! And, now, they’re proudly displayed on the Halloween art work sign!
To make your own handprint spiders and DIY lacing card-style webs, here’s what you’ll need..
Supplies
- paper plates
- paint colors of your choice (I let the boys pick–they chose orange and red)
- black paint
- paintbrush(es)
- stick-on googly eyes or white paint
- hole punch
- white twine (you’ll want about 36 inches or so for each plate)
- Let the child completely cover their paper plate in paint (just make sure it doesn’t go on too thick). Let dry.
- Paint the palm of the child’s hand & 4 fingers (don’t paint the thumb) with black paint! Press down on dry painted plate, being careful to not move the fingers too much. Then, repeat process with other hand. When pressing the 2nd hand down, overlap on the other palm print. That is what forms the spider’s body. Let dry.
- Attach googly eyes or paint on eyes with white & black paint.
- Punch 16 holes around the inside edge of the plate.
- Secure the twine with a large knot on the back side of the plate (you may want to add a little glue to help make sure it doesn’t come through the hole). Then, let the child create a web with the twine, using the plate as a lacing card. (Little ones may need some help with this).
- End the twine in back & secure it by tying it off or gluing it down.
- Hang up & enjoy! 🙂

Wow, this is perfect for our Sunday afternoon! I’m doing it for sure! I have a 5 year old and an 18th month old. I think I may even let the little guy get in on this one! The messier the better right? Then see how he does with the lacing, again, what fun! Thanks for sharing! (Found you via a linky…sorry can’t remember which one!)
Thanks for this great craft! We made them with my 4 and 7 yr old kids and they loved them and had lots of fun.
These are so cute! Will be making them today with the kids 🙂
Thanks!
Just made these with my 1st and 2nd grade special education students as part of our bug unit. They loved them! So much fun to make!
What a great idea! Thank you for posting it! Can’t wait to do it with my class!
Such a great idea and it helps them learn in the process. My girls are going to love this. I am sharing on my facebook page tomorrow! Thank you.
Hi Cassandra! Thanks so much for sharing! Glad you’re excited about the activity!
Sara – This really is such CUTE idea! Do you have any suggestions on how to prevent the kids’ hands from being stained by the paint. The idea of using black, of all colors, scares me! 😉
Hi Andrea,
Thanks so much for stopping by! We didn’t have an issue with it. It was a while back now, but I think we used washable tempera paint – maybe Crayola even. So, once the kiddos washed up, everything seemed to come off just fine! Good lucK! 🙂
Ok, I’ll make sure it’s washable paint and will give it a try! Thank you again!
Could possible use extra long shoe laces with younger children! Easier to poke thru the holes!
Absolutely!
