We had so much fun this Halloween in a galaxy far, far away! The Force was definitely strong with our DIY Star Wars family costumes!!!
With all the Star Wars excitement gearing up for the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie, it was no question that we were going to do a Star Wars family costume theme this year! We actually did family Star Wars costumes in 2012 (Baby Brother made an adorable Yoda). But, we were eager to do it again!
We had characters represented from each major trilogy in the Star Wars saga – A Jedi from any movie in the saga, Darth Maul from the prequels, Darth Vader from the original trilogy. Then we had the BB-8 droid and new Sith Kylo Ren from the new Force Awakens film! SO MUCH FUN!!
So here’s the run down on our costumes (with some affiliate links included)! Halloween may be over, but there’s a BIG movie coming out in a few months that would be fun to dress up for (or maybe for some fun at-home Star Wars movie parties)!!!
DIY Darth Vader & Master Jedi Costumes With just a few purchased pieces (especially the Darth Vader mask and maybe a good adult-sized cape), you can actually put together a decent DIY Darth Vader costume (<—click there for all the DIY Vader details)! We actually made this costume for the boys’ Star Wars birthday party and it’s gotten some good use! Amazing for such a simple costume!
The Jedi Costume was completely DIY. I’m going to try to get a simple tutorial blog post up for it too (in the meantime though, you could get a simple tunic/robe pattern)! We created a simple tunic out of a linen material, then made the tabards, and belt with some simple fabrics. Some simple leggings underneath and boots complete the look (here’s the link to my boots that I LOVE). DIY BB-8 Droid Costume
Our little BB-8 was a huge hit. Not many on our trick-or-treating route knew who he was. But, many asked and it sparked some fun conversation about the upcoming movie! I’m sure after this winter, BB-8 will be as familiar as R2D2! You can get the full directions for making your own easy BB-8 costume here (no sewing skills required) –> DIY BB-8 Costume
DIY Darth Maul Costume
We went part DIY and part store-bought on this one. I REALLY didn’t love the selection of Darth Maul costumes that exist. And, Little Brother has been asking me to make him a Maul costume for the better part of a year. So, I put a couple of store-bought pieces together and did a DIY version of the most key piece for a Maul costume –the mask! Now, you could of course do an amazing face paint job for a Darth Maul costume. But, for a little guy who loves playing dress-up, doing a mask was a much better investment of my time as he can now become Maul anytime he likes.
So the costume run-down for this was the DIY mask (which I’ll have a tutorial post on soon), black pants, and either a black shirt (an altered store-bought Kylo Ren costume), and a black hooded cloak. For our festivities, Little Brother decided he wanted his chin painted to complete the look. And, he absolutely LOVED it!!!!
Kylo Ren Costume
And last but certainly not least, we have Big Brother as Kylo Ren (the new bad guy from Star Wars: The Force Awakens). Since the movie isn’t out yet, we don’t know who he is or any back story. Big Brother was drawn to the multi-blade lightsaber though, so was thrilled to be him for Halloween. We found a store-bought Kylo Ren costume and Kylo Ren lightsaber that weren’t even $25 total when I bought them. So, it was a nice inexpensive buy (and much easier than trying to DIY that whole look too). The boys are thrilled to have another costume for their dress-up bin!
Needless to say, we had such a fun night in our Star Wars costumes! We even met up with some friends & really made it a whole Star Wars crew (you can see her simple Chewbacca costume here). At a few houses, people even asked to take a picture of our whole group!! So fun!! The Force was definitely strong with us! Now, we may just have to do it again for the opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on December 18th!!! Should we go in costumes for the opening night?! We’ll see what happens! In the meantime, here’s a fun countdown printable for the movie! We can’t wait!
