It’s no secret that we LOVE family travel — both domestic and international! We just recently spend a few weeks Down Under, including our first international vacation home rentals. So, I’m excited to share some tips and considerations for booking a vacation home on your next international family holiday as part of a sponsored partnership with HomeAway. As a family of 5, we’ve found that staying in hotels (especially internationally) can sometimes be difficult and/or exceptionally pricey. We’re often forced to book either 2 rooms or an expensive suite. So, renting a vacation home instead of a hotel stay has been something we’ve been doing frequently when traveling with kids and especially when traveling as a multigenerational family group. As I’ve shared before, there are MANY reasons why we consider booking a home rental – namely space and price! I mean, just check out this amazing vacation home rental we found for part of our Australia trip:
Vacation Home Rental Australia
Look at all the space…and that kitchen!!! WAY more than we’d have in any hotel and this is just one area of the HUGE house! This beautiful property in Elliot Heads, Australia is where we stayed for a trip up to the Great Barrier Reef! Bundaberg, Queensland is about a 5 hour drive or so from Brisbane (our main hub and the home of my brother-in-law) and the southernmost starting point of the reef. We needed a few nights in the area and a place to relax after driving and a day snorkeling on the reef. So, renting a vacation home in the area was the PERFECT solution for our family. There was PLENTY of room for everyone and at a great price!
By booking a rental home like this, we had our own private pool, beautiful rooms, multiple bathrooms, and space to relax as a whole big group! Everything was so fabulous!
This bathtub and bathroom were swoon-worthy!
And the kitchens! Yes…kitchenS. There was a kitchen space in both the upstairs and downstairs! Talk about a perfect place for a large, multigenerational family group! I LOVE it – the simple, clean space and the natural light. Yes!
We made meals here, played games, and even enjoyed some leisurely reading time!

So, if you’re going to be in the Bundaberg, Queensland area of Australia, we HIGHLY recommend this beautiful Elliot Heads property! And no matter where you’re traveling, I really recommend looking into booking a vacation home.
Booking International Vacation Home Rentals
For your international home rental, be sure that you’re booking through a trusted site like HomeAway! With over 2 million unique places to stay worldwide, they’re more likely to have something that might work for your family – no matter how far your travels are taking you! Then, as you start searching for your perfect rental and getting quotes, be sure to pay attention what currency the rate is showing in. I made the mistake of missing that at one point and thought my quoted price changed quite a bit when really once result was just in AUD instead of USD. And, while it’s always a good idea to really look over the details (like cleaning fees, special rules, etc), I feel like that is especially important when you are traveling internationally. Sometimes you might find that the norms for rental properties in the country you’re traveling to are a bit different from your domestic travels. If there is any kind of language barrier, this becomes even more important. With all that in mind, be sure you give yourself some time to find the right property! Taking the time to research options available in the area(s) you’re traveling to can REALLY pay off in money-savings and finding awesome properties like the one we found!
And now that you know have some tips and ideas about booking a vacation rental for your next international holiday, be sure to head over to our post on what to look for as you decide on the perfect rental!
