As a Lowe’s Creative Ideas blogger, the focus of this month’s theme was all about summer with fun things like backyard ideas and rope projects. We combined the challenge and decided on a fun rope swing for one of our backyard trees! This is SUCH a simple project and one that the boys have been absolutely loving since we hung it in the tree!
Building the simple rope swing really is super easy – you just need a few supplies! You picked up the round pine panel, some paint, and the rope at Lowe’s.
Here’s the specifics:
- 15″ Solid Pine Edge-Glued Panel
- 5/8″ spade drill bit (to drill the hole for the rope)
- 5/8″ red & white Braided Polypropylene Rope (the amount depends on where you’ll be hanging it)
- ruler or measuring tape
- red paint (or your color choice)
- paint brush
Measure the pine panel to get the exact center and use the 5/8″ spade drill bit to make a whole for the rope. Then, paint whatever color you like (or seal it and leave it a natural color). We loved the pop of color from our bright red bench, so we used that same paint. While that dries, take your rope and figure out your tree placement. Tie the rope to a sturdy branch in the tree. Once the seat it dry, thread the rope through the hole in the seat. Determine the appropriate height (ours is VERY low to the ground so that Little Brother can get on by himself) and then knot the rope on the underneath side. Once everything is knotted & sturdy, it’s safe to swing!!
You can cut the excess rope off underneath or leave it. My boys have liked using it as a sort of handle to help swing the seat around, so we’ve left it. Also, the rope does stretch out a bit overtime. But, you can always raise it up again by altering the seat knot. All in all, it’s super easy – a perfect weekend afternoon project and something that your kids will love! Once they get the hang of balancing themselves on the single round seat (which is great for building motor skills), they will LOVE it!! My boys have used it almost daily for the past 2 months!
