Do your kids love to play with your favorite “i”-device? My boys do! They LOVE when they get a chance to play on Mommy’s iphone. So, I have a whole little app section on my phone reserved just for them. They love interactive games, but sometimes just want to relax and watch something too. And, guess what?! There’s an app for that! 🙂

Playground TV is an app that brings commercial-free, educational & entertaining children’s TV right to your iPhone, iPod Touch and/or iPad. With the app, children can watch full episodes and clips of some of their favorite shows from PBS KIDS, Nick Jr. (iPhone & iPod Touch only), Discovery for Families, Baby First TV, Sesame Street, VeggieTales, and more! In fact, right now as I’m writing this post, the boys are watching their absolute favorite show, Wild Kratts (remember the Wild Kratts birthday party?!)!! This app is great for a family like ours with young kids, especially because we don’t have cable. We do get PBS Kids (through our awesome bunny ears antennae), but we don’t get any of the cable shows (like Nick Jr. or Discovery). So, Big Brother was ecstatic to find shows like Dora and Diego on the app! The app itself is FREE. When you download the app, there are a decent amount of clips & episodes available right away (for free). This is a great feature if you want to have a just a few educational & entertaining videos for the kids or if you want to actually try out the app before spending any money. Here’s what the app looked like on my phone after downloading. There was a whole free section to scroll through starting with a full-episode of Sid The Science Kid! But, to get  access to the full variety of shows included in Playground TV you will need a subscription. Subscriptions (which are an in-app purchase) are available for 1, 3 or 6 months to start watching everything, right from within Playground TV. A 1-month subscription is $4.99. A 3-month subscription is $12.99, and a 6-month subscription is $23.99, all billed to your iTunes account. Any of the subscription options let you watch on all iOS devices that you own – buy it once, and run it on both an iPad and multiple iPhones!

What I like about Playground TV:

  • It has many of the boys’ favorite shows (like Dinosaur Train, Wild Kratts, Sesame Street, Veggie Tales, and Go Diego Go)! And, they’re the shows that I like them to see because each has an educational component to it!
  • It’s commercial free & completely safe for kids. No ads popping up, no programming that I don’t want them exposed to.
  • It’s super easy to navigate! Both boys (ages 5 & 2) had no problem figuring out what to do. There is a simple, character-based navigation. So, it makes it really easy for kids to recognize the characters & select the show they want to watch.
  • You don’t have to download individual shows and that there are multiple subscription levels and options available!

If nothing else, this app would be FANTASTIC for traveling! On a long plane flight or car ride, this could keep the kids entertained for hours for just $4.99! In fact, we have a trip coming up in November and I know the boys will love having this! Now, I just need to go get them some headphones! 🙂
