Our interview time with Michael Rooker on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was absolutely hilarious! I will say, it was the most unique interview I’ve ever done. I mean, first off, how often do you get to sit and talk to someone in full blue make-up?! He’s got a really dry sense of humor and made lots of jokes. We even had a whole joking discussion about the blue people of Kentucky (it’s a thing, look it up)? Ha! So it was definitely entertaining, but he was super personable too! He started off by walking into the room and looking each one of us in the eye (and then saying, “pretty ladies”). At the end, he even wanted our group pics on his own phone too! Fun!
So, when talking to a blue person with a fin coming out of their head, it was natural for us to ask some questions about that! He shared that it takes about 2 hours for makeup, since it takes a while to become blue! We also learned that the development of the fin in this one is part of the story we’ll learn more about.
Then, he did show and tell with Yondu’s teeth. Ha – and yes, I’m totally serious! He brought in the teeth to show us and discussed how he had to really learn to talk in those. In talking about playing Yondu then (and all this characterization with the make-up, fin, etc), Rooker shared that it’s really easy for him to get into character with this role – in part because the character was really written for him and also because the costume helps him get into character!
Then we talked about his role in this movie. One big question we asked was, has Yondu teamed up with some of the Guardians of the Galaxy? And well, his answer was hilarious (like many of his answers).
Well, they’ve teamed up with me. Please. I’m the one that can whistle and take out a whole army, okay?
HA! We also learned that we can expect to see a little different side to Yondu in this film. “There’s some differences from the first one. We didn’t get too in-depth with the first movie. We get to learn a bit more about Yondu and his relationship with Quill. I won’t tell you specifics because I don’t want you to know.”
There was A LOT more we discussed, but would be out of context here. So, I’ll leave it at that. But, suffice it to say that we had a lot of fun and Michael Rooker is a fun guy who is great in the role of Yondu! Make plans to see him reprise that role when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017!
