Hello everyone! I am Rhonda, aka Mrs. Greene, and I am so excited that Sara invited me to share a project on her blog today! I come from a large family (my mother is the oldest of 6 siblings and my dad is the middle child of 7), so when we get together for holidays it’s a pretty big to-do. It also means that, unlike the “traditional” Thanksgiving table scene, we usually find ourselves spread out across an entire house worth of tables, spilling out of the dining room and into the living room and kitchen and anywhere else we can cram a few extra chairs. Because of this, our big family meals are all served buffet-style. Keeping that in mind, I decided to turn a cute little tin bucket from the dollar store into a vessel to hold rolls of silverware. You could also use it to hold all kinds of other things!
You will need:
- Decorative metal bucket
- Silk leaves
- Letter stickers
- Mod Podge
- Paintbrush
- Craft knife
- Silverware
- Napkins
- Curling ribbon
You can do this project with just about any container you want; I chose this particular one because I loved the shape and size. I found it at Dollar Tree, where they also had the same bucket in several different colors. That is also where I grabbed a bag of silk leaves in fall colors.
Paint a medium-thick layer of Mod Podge onto the surface of the container and gently press a leaf into it. I chose to place my leaves around the entire bottom edge, so I glued them on with lots of overhang. Let the Mod Podge dry for a couple of minutes, then brush another layer over the top.
Continue adding leaves until the entire bottom edge of the container is covered. Allow the Mod Podge to dry.
Use a craft knife to carefully trim off the overhanging excess leaves.
If desired, use letter stickers to add the word “thanks” to the front of the container. I also added another coat of Mod Podge over the lettering to make sure that over time the stickers won’t peel off. Once all of the Mod Podge is completely dry, you may choose to seal the project with a couple coats of clear spray paint. This is another optional step, but will make a world of difference if there is any chance your project will be exposed to moisture, which can make the Mod Podge become tacky!
Roll silverware inside of napkins and tie with short lengths of curling ribbon. Fill up the bucket and place it alongside the plates at the beginning of the buffet line!
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!
