DIY Football Field Table Cover {College Football Tailgate Party}

It’s week #2 of the 2013 College Football Tailgate Party and this week I’m sharing how to make an awesome football field table cover with a few supplies from the hardware store. One of our Lowe’s Creative Ideas blogger challenge options this month was all about football, so you know that’s what I had to go with! This DIY football field is perfect decor for at-home game watching…or you can roll it up and take it with you to the tailgate! DIY Football Field Table Cover

This one is super easy to make and with the exception of gluing on the numbers, it really doesn’t take too long to do! You’ll just need a few supplies that you can pick up at Lowe’s! For the basic field, here’s what you’ll need:

  • grass area rug (we got a large roll (6′ x 7′ for less than $20 & still have some left for other project ideas)
  • Duct tape – white and green (and team colors if you want)
  • scissors
  • Gorilla Glue

To make it more “fancy” and have the numbers, I used white vinyl & cut out the numbers with my craft cutting machine. That was the most tedious part (especially trying to glue on the numbers). If you skip that part, you can have the basic field made rather quickly! DIY football table cover suppliesStart the process by measuring the table you’d like your field to go on. For us, that measured 24″ x 48″. With the large roll of “grass” area rug though, you should be able to do a large table even if need be! I recommend doing the cutting outside as little bits of the cut “grass” to tend to come off everywhere! Making a football table coverOnce cut, the first thing you’ll want to do is seal the cut edges. I decided to do it in green to match the field, but you could skip green altogether and just use white like boundary lines on the field. I rolled out a long section of tape, sticky side up. Then we set the cut field on half of the tape, and folded the other half over the top. diy football field

Once the edges are sealed, make yard lines for the field using the white tape. We made our lines 1/4 of a piece of tape. So, we cut long strips of the white duct tape in half & then in half again. At this point, do a little math to decide how far apart to make your yard lines. For our available space, we did every 4 inches! football field yard linesYou could definitely stop here and have an awesome basic football field table cover design. But, I decided to take steps further. Since Nebraska’s football field has a big red “N” in the middle, I decide to make one out of red duct tape. Then, I also decided to do numbers. That was really the only tedious part. The vinyl didn’t stick well on its own, so I added a bit of Gorilla Glue to each number. I won’t lie, it took a while to do, but I love the end result!
