New Show at Disneyland: Mickey and the Magical Map!

Disneyland's Mickey and the Magical MapMickey and the Magical Map is the newest show at Disneyland, now playing at Fantasyland Theater. The show officially opened on May 25th and I had the pleasure of attending a special media event to see the premiere this past week! Fantasyland Theater“Mickey and the Magical Map” takes guests on a musical adventure with a mischievous Mickey Mouse and the biggest character on stage, the Magical Map. The Map spans the entire stage and has magical powers that come to life through amazing theatrical wizardry, colorful visuals and wonderful music.Mickey and the Magical MapThe show presents Mickey in his timeless role as the sorcerer’s apprentice. Wise sorcerer Yen Sid directs his Mapmakers, a singing-dancing ensemble cast that paints a wondrous map – capable of taking dreamers to any place imaginable. Sorcerer MickeyApprentice Mickey lets his curiosity get the better of him and he stumbles upon the map’s magical powers, which take him, along with the audience, on a fantastic journey of imagination in the company of the Mapmakers. The journey, presented through theatrical stage wizardry, unveils wonderful worlds of music, color, adventure and beloved characters with each new direction – all set to an original song, “Journey of the Imagination,” and music from classic Disney films like Jungle Book, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tangled, The Little Mermaid, Lilo and Stitch, and The Princess and The Frog. Disneyland Show“Each new show we create is a chance to push storytelling in a new direction,” said Michael Jung, Theatrical Development Executive, Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Entertainment. “At Disney, we love the challenge of continuously looking at our classic tales and most recent stories to see how we can bring live entertainment and excitement to today’s audiences.”  After seeing this, I can definitely say that it really does represent some of the best in Disney storytelling! What adds to the greatness of this show is that the cast is phenomenal. In interviews after the show with Michael Jung, I found out that Disney hosted open auditions for this show, where over 900 people auditioned for 54 spots! 80% of those 54 are new to the Disney show lineup (not performing in any other capacity)! So, they really did find the best for the characters, singers, and dancers! They were great! And, being a band person, I loved the trumpet player in the show. He is phenomenal!

Here’s a quick sneak peek from the premiere show to give you a better feel:

Fun, huh?! I LOVED the show. It’s got such a diversity of songs and movies represented. The closing number with Princess Tiana (which Mickey then joins in on) was such high energy fun! Princess Tiana & MickeyAfter seeing the show, I had the amazing opportunity to interview Disneyland’s Director of Entertainment, Doug McIntyre, about the show. I loved finding out about the inspiration for the show, how they decided on which songs & characters to include, and even find out about his favorite part. Be sure to watch the interview to see the very special guest who joined us at the end! 😉

The 22-minute long show is slated to be on stage for 5 performances daily throughout the summer in Fantasyland Theater. And, it’s exclusive to Disneyland. So, make sure you make time for Mickey and the Magical Map on your next Disneyland trip!

Disclosure: I was invited to attend a special media event for the premiere of Mickey and the Magical Map and the Monstrous Summer kickoff. However, as always, all opinions, experiences, and love of Disney are entirely my own.
