Back to School time sure has a way of being stressful on parents! Staying on top of news from the school, meet the teacher nights, school supplies to buy, new clothes or uniforms to get, forms to fill out, doctors appointments, things to organize at home…the list goes on and on. We’re new to this whole back to school routine. Last year, with Big Brother just going to Kindergarten, I was a bit overwhelmed by it all. Here in Arizona we have open enrollment, so even just choosing a school was insane! Thankfully this year though, I feel like we’re in a better groove. To get ready, we did some organizing at home, made lists, labeled items and the first day was great. Then, just one day in and I already forgot his snack! Seriously?!?! Poor hungry kid! This morning as we were packing up his backpack he said, “hey mom, make sure you get me a snack!” HA! So my first grader is already reminding me about school things. I think I need a labeled checklist! 😉 So, while I’m thinking about it, here are some tips for preventing back to school mishaps….Back to School Tips

  1. Re-establish morning & night routines! The casual summer schedule can be so fun and relaxed, but routine is important for kids. The start of school will go much more smoothly when kids (and parents) are back in the groove of a consistent bedtime and morning routine.
  2. Get information from your child’s school. Make sure you have the information needed from school– meet the teacher night dates, school supply, lists, start of school information, etc. If you’re not sure about something, call and ask! Everyone (kids, parents, and teachers included) will have a much better start to the year when everyone is on the same page!
  3. Shop with school supply sales (with your list) and stock up! Not only do I get the supplies on his list & some to donate, but I make sure I have some extras at home. I keep one bin full of  glue, scissors, #2 pencils, erasers, crayons, and markers. The prices on these items are WAY cheaper than at other times of the year. So, stock up and save yourself some stress later!
  4. Organize the house. Designate an area for doing homework and a place where all the school papers are going to go. In fact, this year, we created a school command center (more on that coming soon) to help keep us organized here at home! This is also a great time to go through old clothes and shoes to get all that organized.
  5. Make a morning to-do list. This can be for the kids or parents…or both! A visible checklist on the fridge or the way out the door will help ensure that everyone has what they need–like snack!! 😉
  6. Prepare the night before! Picking clothes out, organizing backpacks, and making lunches can all be done the night before. Make it part of the nighttime routine and it will make the mornings so much less stressful!
  7. LABEL EVERYTHING! Labeling items might be useful at home if you’ve got multiple kids in school (color-coding systems work great for that), but labeling the items that go to school are important for preventing the “I lost it” mishap. If and when that happens, by having items labeled, hopefully it will be easy to track down. So, get those labels on the backpacks, lunch boxes, water bottles, clothes (maybe even shoes), folders, notebooks, etc! Bright Star makes labeling easy with their stick-on and iron-on labels! The stick-on labels are extremely durable, so they’ll withstand the wear and tear of dishwashers. They’re 100% waterproof and scratch resistant. So, they’ll stick to most plastics and will stay for years. When you’re ready to remove them, simply peel off and no residue will be left behind. Easy peasy! The iron-on labels are quick and easy to pop on to all your kids’ clothing. They will stay stuck in the toughest washing machine and clothes dryer cycle, and will still look great in years to come. Nice, right? Bright Star offers a popular school labels kit that has all the stick-on and iron-on labels you’ll need for your kids belongings. Simply order online and with free shipping you’ll have your labels in no time. But, first, reply below to get a $5 off coupon!
