So, have you ever had a tanning mishap? Given my super fair skin tone, it’s probably no surprise that I have! In fact, I’ve had plenty! My skin will tan, but not that easily. Here is a summer shot after being in Australia for a few days (we’re on the boat headed out on the Great Barrier Reef–best trip ever! 😉 The trip was in 2009). 
Sun kissed, but not that dark. Still pretty white-ish. And, that’s after multiple days out in the tropics (with some of the most intense UV rays on the planet)! So, over the years, I have tried almost everything out there to give my skin a little more color. Some of those attempts have been disastrous!
First up, there are the real sun kind of tanning mishaps. Right before I left for college, my family did one last fun trip to one of our favorite vacation spots- San Diego. I thought it would be great to have a little tan before going to off to school. We were spending a couple of days at a gorgeous beach house with family friends. I don’t remember how much sunscreen I put on or if I did, but one day on the beach and I got fried. Here we were at the beach and I spent the second day completely inside because I was so sun burnt that it hurt to move. Not good- can we say skin cancer?! Yikes!
I also remember giving sunless tanning lotion a try. Now, that was certainly healthier for my skin than the blistering sun burn, but it looked even more ridiculous. Nothing like orange streaks all over your legs to make a girl feel good! 😉 And, the smell?! Absolutely terrible. I tried it a few times, but I always smelled and looked so awful that I completely gave it up!
