Excited for Christmas? I am! So, I’m thrilled to share this cute DIY Christmas shirt idea with you today (along with links to the design files) as part of a sponsored partnership with Cricut.  DIY Kids' Christmas ShirtsIf you know me in real life or follow online, you may have noticed that I have a “thing” for matching shirts and outfits for my boys! It’s all they’ve ever known, so they seem totally cool with it – which means I’m going to roll with it as long as possible. As they’ve gotten older though (currently 10, 7, and 5), it’s been a little trickier to find matching clothes in everyone’s size. I’m also NOT a fan that A LOT of the clothes for boys in the 8-12 size range seem geared more toward teenagers than kids! So what’s a mom to do? She gets crafty with her Cricut Maker and makes some adorable matching “Hoo loves Christmas” shirts for the kids! Awwww! Aren’t they cute (the boys and the shirts 😉 )?! I LOVE the way the shirts turned out! We LOVE owls around here (especially Baby Brother who was just Hedwig the owl for Halloween). So, when I saw the cute Owl file and the “hoo loves Christmas” saying in Cricut Design Space, I knew we had a winner! I love that the design would work well for boys or girls…and it would also be ADORABLE on pajamas! Christmas Owl Shirt

After buying the supplies, the first step for me in making these shirts was opening up Cricut Design Space and designing the shirts! But you don’t have to do that, because I have the cut file to share with you!!! The owl image and the fonts are right there in Cricut Design Space, so it was easy to create! Click here to access the design –> Hoo Loves Christmas Kids’ Shirt Design You can resize as needed for the size of your shirts and how many you’re making. For my kids, each design is about 1 inch smaller per shirt. Once you have the design sized as you need it, next up is cutting! Now, you could definitely use your Cricut Explore Air Machine for this project if that’s what you have. But I have the new Cricut Maker (which I LOVE and recommend). The Cricut Maker is able to cut fabric using the new rotary cutting blade, which I wanted to do for the owl on this project (if you’d rather though, you could do the owl out of vinyl instead). The blades are really easy to swap out and the rotary blade cut out the flannels owls SO nicely! I also love that the Maker has settings for A LOT of different materials. Each setting has its own unique calibration for the machine, so once you specify the material-type for your cuts, the machine will adjust the blade depth and pressure to those materials! No dials, no second-guessing on your part, SUPER easy!Once everything was cut, I used the new Cricut Easy Press! The 9″ square surface gives a lot more area than an iron, making it really easy to get your designs to adhere to your shirts quickly and easily! This is one really handy tool if you do a lot of iron-on projects! To make the shirts look good, I worked in layers. This is the trickiest part –  just work slowly and make sure you have your plan in place, so you know how the layers go. I started by using the Cricut Easy Press to adhere the green “hoo” and the black part of the owl design. Then, I “ironed-on” the white vinyl cuts and the fabric. I put the red foil on last! IMPORTANT TIP: When layering on the foil, make sure you cut away ALL excess plastic transfer film that might overlap the designs already on the shirt. Otherwise, some of the metallic color will transfer onto the white vinyl and you’ll have pink owl eyes (ask me how I know! 😉 So, don’t make that mistake)! Once you’re done layering everything, the end result is ADORABLE!

Merry Christmas to you and yours and happy crafting! Now…HOO wants to win a Cricut Maker?!
