9/11: Never Forget!

I had other things I could have posted today, but somehow, nothing but remembering 9/11 seemed appropriate. I want to have all the coverage on tv, yet, I don’t want to expose Big Brother to it yet.  His perfectly innocent little mind doesn’t need to know about the horror & terror that some are capable of just yet. So, instead, I’m remembering and sharing my story here.

Septemeber 11, 2001. A Tuesday morning. My senior year of college. Like every other morning of every fall day of my entire college career, I was at band practice. Before smart phones, and before everyone even had cell phones, we had no idea what was going on. We were supposed to have a game in a few days, so we were practicing that show. I had an early class (an upper-level Pysch. Stats Lab) and found out about the 1st plane as soon as I arrived. Then, only a few minutes later, the news of the second plane (our TA was following everything on-line). And, with that, class was basically over.

I had just been inside those big, beautiful buildings 3 months prior. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. We were watching the news feeds and I stood in the doorway of the room next door in shock, hand over my mouth, tears in my eyes as I watched the towers collapse.  Images of that day are forever seared in my memory. Who I was with, what classes went on & which were cancelled. My best friend picked me up that afternoon. As we headed to her apartment, I remember the lines for gas–HUGE lines…people were scared. We sat in her apartment for hours watching new coverage, crying, talking very little. Back at the dorms, I couldn’t sleep that night. I couldn’t stop watching the tv.

Band practice the next morning was hugely emotional–there was no music. We sat on the center of the field. We prayed, we talked, we cried. All college football was cancelled for the weekend. We changed our whole show. Rehearsals were emotional–instead of some fun, update tunes, we were now rehearsing Amazing Grace and God Bless the USA, the head trumpet professor playing “TAPS”.   Our game was the following Thursday night, Sept 20, 2001–one of the first games to be played since 9/11. And, I will never forget it. Chants of USA…the loudest singing of the National Anthem I’ve ever heard…and moments where you could actually hear a pin drop. And, then there was the Tunnel Walk…

It was powerful! That unity, patriotism, and emotion in the days following that fateful day is also something I will never forget. “United We Stand”.

And, now today, I can’t believe it has been 10 years. So much to remember; so much to be thankful for. Heartache for so many Americans who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 and gratitude beyond measure for all those that risked their lives that day and those brave men & women that continue to do so, trying to make sure that it never happens again.

“”For the husband who told his wife I love you one last time before his plane went down in a field. For the wife who stopped in the stairway to call her husband to say I’ll love you forever. For the Parents who kissed their kids goodbye that morning that died. For the policemen who rushed in with the firemen to help get others out only to die themselves. For the soldiers who are fighting back and the ones who’ve lost their lives. Today, Tomorrow, Ten years from now, we will ALWAYS remember!”
