I have quite a few different recipes I turn to for homemade play dough. One of my favorite preschool classroom activities is pretend kitchen play with chocolate dough. This chocolate play dough recipe does not include cream of tartar, making it a great last minute activity. It’s soft for little hands and will make your home or classroom smell like warm chocolate cookies. Most play dough recipes include cream of tartar and although I use it frequently, it’s not an ingredient I always have on hand. The chocolate play dough recipe uses baking soda as a substitute along with other basic ingredients you likely already have in the kitchen already.
Ingredients:
- 1 TBSP baking soda
- 1 TBSP vegetable oil
- 1 C salt
- 2 1/2 C flour
- 1 C cocoa
- 3 C water
Mix all dry ingredients in bowl.
Stir all ingredients in pot over low heat until dough ball forms. Remove from heat, allow to cool, and knead with additional flour (approximately 1/2 C) until dough is no longer sticky.
Use cookie cutters, baking sheets, and other accessories for fun pretend play with your chocolate play dough.
Store play dough in a plastic container for later use.
Do you have little hands in your home that would enjoy making pretend cookies with chocolate play dough?
