Halloween Oreo Pops {Bats & Pumpkins}!

We’ve been having lots of Halloween fun around here lately and these oreo pops definitely were a big hit! Inspired from Amy’s fun Bat Pops on The Idea Room, I knew I had to make some. But, I couldn’t stop there! We ended up with a whole little spooky pumpkin patch! :)

Here is what you’ll need to make them:

- Oreos (Double Stuff are preferable)

- Candy Melts/Bark Coating (dark chocolate, orange, and white with green food coloring or green).

- Popsicle or lollipop sticks

- Sprinkles

- Grape (or other dark color) fruit leather

- chocolate chips

To make:

Start by placing the sticks into the cream layer of the oreos. It can help everything stick better if you dip the end of the stick in the chocolate first. Then, as it hardens, it helps hold the stick in place.

If you don’t have double stuff, then flat popsicle sticks definitely work better. (I discovered this the hard way ;) ).

Then, melt your chocolate according to package directions. I always just put them in a bowl & use the microwave–way easier that way! Coat each “oreo on a stick” with chocolate (dark for bats and orange for the pumpkins). Let harden.

For the bats, while those are hardening, cut out your bat wings. I wanted everything to be edible, so I used dark fruit leather! Just lay the fruit leather out and cut the shape of bat wings. I was able to get about 4 wings per fruit leather. For the bats, once the chocolate is just about hard, push in sprinkles to the front. I used white sprinkles for the mouth & fangs and some large round sprinkles for the eyes. To affix the wings, just put a dab of melted chocolate on the back & stick it on. Let it harden, face down. Then, voila, oreo bats! :)

For the pumpkins, once the orange coating is hard, put some melted chocolate in a baggie with the tip cut off (or a piping bag) and pipe on jack ‘o lantern faces. For their tops, I decided to add a chocolate chip for a stem and piped on some light green melted chocolate for vines. To hold everything up, I covered up a brick of styrofoam with part of a black plastic tablecloth and stuck all the sticks in.

And, they were a BIG hit! :) The kids LOVED them!

So, which would you choose, bat or pumpkin?! :)

So how long does it take for the chocolate to harden? I am looking for a something kids can do for a class party. Thanks!

Hmm, I’ve never timed it, but it’s not long. For instance, as I was doing the pumpkins, the first ones I dipped were mostly hardened by the time I finished dipping the last ones. It goes even faster if you can put them in a fridge or freezer. With that said though, it’s definitely important to use candy melts or bark coating instead of something like chocolate chips as it hardens MUCH faster in my experience. Other factors can influence the time too–like how hot & melted the chocolate is to start with.

These turned out great with the fruit leather! Using paper wings always seemed odd to me. The pumpkins are awesome too!

I used Wilton candy melts microwaved in a bowl and had a hard time coating the Oreos. How did you make them coat so evenly and smooth?

      Sara @MomEndeavors says:

Hi Lisa! The Wilton candy melts tend to be thicker in my experience. I typically use a generic store brand or Merckens (bought at a bakery supply store). With that said though, no matter which type you use, sometimes I find that it’s easy to coat them with a spoon vs. dipping the oreo in the chocolate. And, sometimes I do have to smooth spots out with clean fingers. :) Hope that helps!

Hi I saw these on another site with paper, but I’m kind of freaked out about kids trying to eat paper. So where do you find that fruit leather you used? I only see fruit roll ups at the store usually!

      Sara @MomEndeavors says:

I understand that, Amy! The fruit leather is sold in numerous stores here in AZ. I’ve purchased them at Costco Sprouts (so I’m guessing they might be at other healthy food stores like Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods). I’ve also seen them in our local Kroger store in their health food/organic section. And, I saw them today at Winco. Hope that helps!
