avengers-age-of-ultron-692x1024Avengers, Assemble! It’s finally here! MARVEL’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron is finally in theaters! I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the movie twice already (once at Walt Disney Studios and once in IMAX 3D) and got to interview the cast as part of the #AvengersEvent press tour! So, this is one review that I’m especially excited to share with you!

 About the Movie…

Marvel Studios presents “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.

Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” stars Robert Downey Jr., who returns as Iron Man, along with Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk and Chris Evans as Captain America. Together with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and with the additional support of Don Cheadle as James Rhodes/War Machine, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, Stellan Skarsgård as Erik Selvig and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, the team must reassemble to defeat James Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful newcomers, Pietro Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen and meet an old friend in a new form when Paul Bettany becomes Vision.

Written and directed by Joss Whedon and produced by Kevin Feige, p.g.a., Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963. Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Victoria Alonso, Jeremy Latcham, Patricia Whitcher, Stan Lee and Jon Favreau serve as executive producers. Get set for an action-packed thrill ride when The Avengers return in Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” on May 1, 2015.

Our Thoughts:

Just after the screening, I tweeted out my immediate reaction to the movie…which I still stand by:

Clearly, I thought it was GREAT! And, I even liked it even more after seeing it the 2nd time (especially after getting to interview the cast & hearing from them about favorite scenes, hardest scenes to shoot, etc.).

Just like the first Avengers film, Age of Ultron is action-packed and full of superhero fun! And this one starts RIGHT in the action. As Joss Whedon explained in our interview, he wanted the movie to start with a bang and “just go ‘boom, we’re back.” There’s a really great “unabashedly comic book frame” in that opening sequence. Plus, there is an epic Hulk Buster fight scene that people are already talking about (and is Chris Evans’ favorite fight scene in the film)! Between all that and trying to save the world from Ultron (a “murder bot” as Bruce Banner calls him), this film definitely packs A LOT of action just like the first Avengers and all the other superhero films in the MARVEL Universe.

However, there is a different feel to this movie compared to the first Avengers. And, truth be told, I think I actually like this one better – and that is definitely saying something for a sequel!! The dynamic is just different – instead of setting up the team, the team is already together & has clearly been working together for quite awhile.  There is definitely a darker, more serious, more intense, and more battle- weary tone to the team. Yet at the same time, there is a more comfortable air about them (though not without their flaws & some ongoing trust issues). They know each other; they’ve formed friendships/relationships; and they’ve clearly got a lot of shared experience. Some of that comfort/relaxed feel is seen with the jokes they make with each other or about each other. There are some absolutely hilarious one-liners, scenes, and running jokes that go on throughout the movie.

Avengers Age of Ultron Fight Scene

Is Avengers Age of Ultron appropriate for kids?

Like all the other movies in the series, The Avengers: Age of Ultron is rated PG-13. So, for the ages the movie is targeted to (teenagers & adults), I think the movie is not only appropriate but absolutely FANTASTIC!! I’ve already seen it twice and would happily go see it again!!

BUT….the question I’ve already fielded from many moms is, “is Avengers appropriate for younger kids?“. Obviously, everyone has different family dynamics & parenting beliefs, but my personal answer to this question is “not really”!  And, that’s no knock on the movie – I just think it’s geared toward adults and children older than say at least 9 or 10. But, really, it all depends on what your kids have seen before & what you’re comfortable with.

To help you make a decision on what’s right for your family, here’s a few examples of content that parents/younger viewers might be especially sensitive to. *SPOILER ALERT* (I’m trying to stay as vague as I can while still sharing some helpful parent-review info, but some might find the following information to contain spoilers. If you don’t want to know anything more, STOP READING NOW!)

  • Language. For a PG-13 movie, honestly the bad language is pretty mild (no f-bombs). However, some of those swearing moments are very obvious (and are actually the subject of a running joke). The first line spoken by any main character in the film is, “SHIT”.
  • Death. Without giving away specifics, I will say that one or more MAIN characters dies in the movie. There is another scene showing a whole group of dead, bloody bodies. Younger viewers might have a hard time with both of these parts.
  • Scarlet Witch Hallucinations. The Scarlet Witch is a new character in the film with a VERY integral role. As part of this, a few key characters fall under her spell and suffer some emotional hallucinations. Some of the scenes in these hallucinations might be especially disturbing to younger viewers.
  • Innuendo. There is a bit of romance/flirting in the film and in a couple particular scenes, there is some definite innuendo (both characters in towels talking about showering together).
  • Violence. This one is obvious, given all the action I mentioned earlier. Really, the violence & fighting (“intense sequences of violence & destruction”) is the main reason for the PG-13 label.

When comparing it to some of the other MARVEL films, I would say that it seemed a little darker/more intense than the first Avengers film – with just a little more profanity & innuendo. However, it’s nowhere near the darkness and intensity of Captain America the Winter Soldier. So, hopefully that info & comparisons help you make your decision!

We were BIG fans of the movie though and with a house of 3 little boys, I know there will be many, many super hero movies in our future! Our boys (who right now are 8, 5, & 2) will definitely be seeing it as soon as we feel they’re old enough! Until that time, Mr. Mom Endeavors will continue to enjoy our favorite MARVEL superhero movies for fun date nights!!

Captain-America-and-ThorThe Avengers: Age of Ultron is in theaters NOW and is sure to be a Hulk-smashing hit!
