Teaching Our Kids to Live Green #LiveLiketheLorax

As a former biology teacher, I’ve done my fair share of teaching teens about the environment, nature, ecology, and thus, protecting our planet. Now, with my own kiddos, I’m trying to teach some of those same values and lessons–just to a much younger audience! Those lessons are certainly important to teach year-round, but with Earth Day upon us this weekend, it’s the perfect time to have a conversation about green living and ways to help our environment! One of our latest (and favorite) ways to do this is through gardening!

Gardening this year has been such a great way to share all kinds of biological lessons with the kids and is certainly great for instilling “green living”. We’ve been growing some of our own food, which is valuable on so many levels. Just a couple of nights ago, we harvested what was left from our fall/winter garden (which included lots of yummy carrots) and planted for this an early summer crop. We’re trying watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber, zucchini, and yellow squash!

In addition to gardening, there are many other easy “green living” things we try to do, model, and talk to the kids about on a consistent basis:

  1. Recycling everything we can (in our area that’s cans, paper, and almost all plastics)
  2. Turning lights off when they’re not needed & we’re not in the room.
  3. Repurposing all kinds of items (boxes, paper towel rolls, cans, even clothes) for various craft & DIY projects
  4. Reading books about animals, nature, the environment, and taking care of our planet (like Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax”)
  5. Making our own or purchasing some “green” household products, like those from Seventh Generation

Seventh Generation and Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax have joined forces to inspire families to conserve the earth’s resources with conscious consumption. Created with your family, future generations and the environment in mind, Seventh Generation is the natural choice for high-quality and effective products that preserve the air, surfaces, fabrics, pets and people in your home–as well as the world outside.

Make a difference by choosing Seventh Generation products, now offering free shipping for orders over $50. As the Lorax says, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
