As with just about any activity, “practice makes perfect”. The more kids read (and our read to as young children), the better they get at it! Many studies show that reading for just 20 minutes a day can have a major positive effect on a child’s academic success. That must be why part of Big Brother’s Kindergarten homework each month is complete his reading log. The goal is 20 minutes each night/5 nights a week! As a child, I loved reading! So many great stories to get lost in! And, I want that love of reading (and ultimately, love of learning) for my boys. Reading has been part of our bedtime routine since Big Brother was a baby. So, reading is definitely an important thing in our house! And, it’s been so fun watching Big Brother’s reading skills develop this year to where he is now sounding out words & reading small easy-reader books completely on his own!
So, when given the chance to partner with LeapFrog for Reading Month, I was completely on board! According to LeapFrog, “Children who are actively engaged as they read—thinking about what they are reading versus looking passively at the words on the page—have been shown to regularly outperform children who are less engaged in what they are reading.” So to help Big Brother get engaged while reading, LeapFrog sent us a Tag Reading System & fun new dinosaur book! He of course loves it! The scary “sharp-tooth” on the front caught his eye right away! The Tag Reading System is so fun since Big Brother can practice on his own & have the Tag there for extra help/fun! He even read to Little Brother—so cute!
