If you are (or have been in the last good number of years) been a breastfeeding mom, then no doubt you’ve heard of Medela. With all of my breastfeeding struggles, we’ve used A LOT of different Medela productsfrom supplement nursers to pumps and our favorite steam-clean bags. And, now there is another Medela product we’ve used and liked…Calma.

[From the press release] Calma is a research-based nipple used with a BPA-free breastmilk bottle designed to help babies to maintain their natural feeding behavior and transition from bottle back to breast with ease. The vacuum technology in the Calma nipple is vastly different from a conventional bottle nipple, which may disrupt normal feeding behavior and contribute to a difficult transition from bottle to breast. Milk flows freely from a standard bottle nipple even if the baby is not actively sucking — a feature unlike that of the breast. Calma’s technology allows babies to continue their natural feeding behavior as if they were at the breast, making it easier for babies to transition back to breastfeeding.

I’m so impressed with this bottle–it is perfect for us & our situation. It really does work more like breastfeeding than any bottle we’ve encountered. Baby Brother has to latch onto it just right (like nursing) to create that suction & begin getting milk. Because of that, this bottle is something that helped us realize that Baby Brother was tongue tied. In addition to all of my low supply issues, he wasn’t latching well or nursing well at all. I saw a lactation consultant who suspected a tongue tie and referred us to a local pediatrician who treats tongue ties (with electrocautery) for the exclusive purpose of aiding breastfeeding. Before we got to that appointment for the consultation, we tried the Calma bottle with him and he had a terrible time getting latched on to it and making it work.

He was in fact tongue tied and we did proceed with the procedure. Thankfully, it really helped! He latches much better (on to me and bottles) and we’ve actually seen his tongue move around more! So, lately, we’ve been using the Calma bottle a lot. I love the way it mimics nursing and allows him to drink, breathe, and pause regularly. It also seems as though he sucks far less air with this bottle. With all of my issues, anything we can do to help be more successful with nursing is a big deal, so I’m thrilled with this special bottle!!

  1. I researched these when my daughter was born two months early because I was worried about nipple confusion. We never got one but I still want one for when I’m away from her. 🙂

  2. oh my goodness this bottle would be amazing. im not due for awhile, but my other children have had a hard time with nipple confusion so this i’m sure right off the bat would help so much! what an amazing bottle.

  3. My first was so easy with breast feeding compared to the difficulties I’ve endured with my son. And being a postpartum nurse, I see so many moms struggle with breast feeding.

  4. i have always LOVED my Medela pump ‘n store bags!! this seems like an awesome bottle and I’d love to win it to use on my newborn next spring! 🙂 Shhhh! We haven’t even told our kids yet!! 🙂

  5. And I couldn’t have made it without my Medela nipple cream and my Medela pump in style breast pump!

  6. I would never have survived without lanolin. I have extremely dry skin everywhere, including my nipples- which only got worse breastfeeding. Lanolin is a life [and nipple] saver!

  7. I absolutely cannot live without my Boppy. Whether the kids were nursing, hanging around in the floor, or sleeping this is a product we could NOT do without. I’m interested in this bottle and would love to get a chance to try it out.

  8. I couldn’t have survived without my Medula Pump in Style, and freezer bags! My Pump in Style lasted me for a years worth of pumping for both my babies! Loved that thing!

  9. I exclusively pumped because my girls were preemies and had not developed their ability to latch on yet. I pumped with my Medela Symphony, the hospital-grade pump. I don’t know what I would have done without it! So happy to have been able to give them breastmilk. Boppys were great as well! PS I’m not pregnant, I’m entering for a friend :o)

  10. One of my twins had a hard time latching on initially. I used nipple shields and they really helped her. I’m glad we had them!

  11. I’m so glad you’ve found something that can help you continue to nurse as long as you can as well as fill up that baby! we all are just doing our best!

  12. I have a Medela Breast Pump I bought right before my twins were born & I am so glad I did. I pumped around the clock for them in the NICU. I am nursing but use a breastflow bottle for my girl (I already had them) & got Playtex airflow for my son by recommendation from the nurses.

  13. sounds like an amazing bottle, i’d love to try it with my new little one.

ps- loved reading your post about breast feeding struggles. i had my own w/ my first. hoping to do better this next time around.

  14. First-time dad-to-be here — so we still need to learn, but definitely whatever makes feeding easiest for my wife and daughter!

  15. Even though, I don’t use it very often. I love my hand held Medela Pump. I had another brand at one point that didn’t work nearly as well. I really is nice to have around those few times I need it.

  16. I love my Medela pump ‘n style advanced. I used it daily with my first and not as much with my almost 9 month old, but it’s the one thing I haven’t regretted spending a lot of money on.
