No more pre-rinsing dishes!! #FinishRiseandShine Challenge

Finish Powerball

I was recently asked to take the Finish Rise and Shine Challenge with my family (*this is post is sponsored). What exactly is that challenge? Well, basically it was to put Finish® Quantum® with New Power Gel to the test! Our task was to create an amazingly tasty, messy, sticky, and difficult-to-clean meal and then relax! We were told to put the dishes right into the dishwasher (no pre-rinse allowed!) and let them sit there until it’s time for bed. So, that’s exactly what we did! For our tasty, sticky, messy meal, I served up some raspberry stuffed french toast! Baked Stuffed French ToastIt’s delicious! Mr. Mom Endeavors had a big breakfast plate of it and I cut some up for the boys in their plastic “kids” bowls. Complete with raspberry jam, cream cheese, and some real maple syrup for good measure, it definitely classified as tasty & sticky!Raspberry French ToastAfter that yummy breakfast, we went about our Saturday and let the plates sit all day! No wiping, no water, no pre-rinse! You can see that there was some serious “residue” left on the dishes! Dirty DishesBy 11:00pm at night, it was hard, dry & crusty. But, we stuck to the rules and everything went straight into the dishwasher as is. As the directions stated, we put one  Finish Quantum with New Power Gel tab in our soap area and set the dishwasher like normal. Finish PowerballHonestly, I was REALLY skeptical. Our dishwasher is the original that came with the house (1998) and not really the greatest! Plus, we have really, really hard water. Often times, our dishes come out with some sort of soapy/hard water residue on them. Mr. Mom Endeavors who is a “firm-believer” in the pre-rinse couldn’t believe what we were doing. But, we turned it on anyway and went to bed, fully expecting to find only partially clean dishes.

So, what did we find this morning?! Take a look at this before and after:

#FinishRiseandShineDo you see that?! Sparkling, clean dishes!! We were both shocked!!!! Not a speck of any sticky food residue left on any of the dishes. AND, no hard water or soap residue either. Here’s a closer look: Clean Dishes #FinishRiseandShineI’d say the Finish Quantum passed the test!!! Amazing!

You can take the challenge yourself and share your results on their website (with the hashtag #FinishRiseandShine) and on the Finish Facebook page! I’d love to know if you have the same results!

What sticky, messy food would you use in the #FinishRiseandShine Challenge?

*Dislcosure: I received the product shown above and a thank you gift from Finish for participating in the #FinishRiseandShine challenge. As always, all opinions and experiences are entirely my own!

Patio Lighting & Ceiling Fan Makeover #LowesCreator

Patio Makeover Before & After

As a Lowe’s Creative Ideas Blogger (*this is a sponsored post), this month’s challenge was all about outdoor projects! One outdoor project we’ve really been wanting to do for some time now is getting new patio lights and ceiling fans. Earlier this spring we did a little mini patio makeover, but there was still one major eye-sore…Sagging Outdoor Ceiling FansOh dear, those sad, sagging ceiling fans! Trust me when I say that they looked even worse in person than they do in this picture. The house was built in ’98 and I’m sure these were the original fans installed on the patio. In addition, it doesn’t look like they were outdoor rated. So, over the years, the fans had become horribly weathered and saggy! droopy ceiling fan bladesSee?! Not pretty! We wanted something that would not only look nicer, but be more suitable for outside and hopefully not get all saggy & warped! We found some great options at Lowe’s! Since we were updating the fans, we decided to replace the back porch light as well. Here’s a peek at what we got: Patio lightingThankfully, install was really pretty easy! Mr. Mom Endeavors & my cousin were able to get everything swapped out in just a couple of hours! Look at how yellowed this one was! Blah!Ceiling fan makeoverSo, in just a couple of hours and a bit of DIY install, we went from saggy, discolored, “blah” fans to much prettier & fun! Don’t you think?! Patio Ceiling FanIt ties everything together so well! I love them! Plus, they give off so much more cool air than the old droopy ones–and loads more light too! More functionality and more aesthetically pleasing is always a huge win! Patio makeoverYou can see in the above image that even the back patio light got a makeover. The original light was small and boring. So, we opted for something quite a bit larger and with some character. It doesn’t match the fan style, but we still like it a lot! An easy and inexpensive upgrade for sure! Patio Lighting MakeoverSo, needless to say, we are very much so enjoying our patio this spring! We made sure to complete all the updates prior to hosting Easter and the boys’ birthday party. They certainly weren’t necessary fixes, but it’s nice to do some vanity updates every now & then! Here’s the complete before & after: Patio Makeover Before & AfterWhat patio updates would you like to make?

Closet Organization with Fellowes #BankersBox!

Simple Closet Storage Solutions

As a Fellowes Bankers Box Stackable Storage Ambassador (this is a sponsored post), I recently received the stylish stackable storage options from Fellowes Bankers Box!  With four sizes and a cute pattern, they are not the bankers box of old! Bankers BoxWe’re in the midst of working on a major closet overhaul. And the new boxes are SO much better! They are definitely a simple organization solution! Simple Closet Storage SolutionsOur master bedroom closet is a serious disaster in a big way! We moved into our house just a few weeks before Little Brother was born 3 years ago (and while I was still teaching) and our master bedroom & closet were the last priority. Our master closet is rather large and so is a storage place as well. Without sharing the full horror, here is just one little nook: Closet nook beforeSeriously, random boxes from when we moved in! Plus, there’s other random junk, old purses just strewn up there, and a whole bunch of wasted space! This seemed like the perfect place to start with the new Bankers Boxes we received!  We started with just two of the sizes that fit well in our space. They were easy to put together and in just a few minutes we had some surprisingly sturdy boxes. Bankers BoxesLess than 30 minutes later, we had a whole new look in our nook space. Purses and shoes put in to the larger boxes. And, some of the keepsake items stored in the smaller two up top. Closet nook afterDoesn’t that look so much better?! Such a simple solution. It didn’t take long at all and that space is not only more functional, but is much nicer to look at! Now, we are looking forward to tackling the rest of the closet this weekend!

What are YOUR best closet organization tips?

Bankers Box

As a Fellowes Bankers Box Stackable Storage Ambassador (this is a sponsored post) and we’re kicking things off with some info…and a giveaway! So, when you hear “bankers box”, what do you think of? Until recently, I thought of some boring white file boxes. But, with the Fellowes Bankers Box, there are actually stylish boxes! In fact, they are right up my alley in black and white with a decorative pattern! See?! Bankers Box

Four different sizes, with clear windows, and a cute pattern?! Love it! The boxes look SO much nicer than so many of our current home storage solutions!

After we get through all the fun that is the boys’ birthday week & party, I am so eager to put these to good use. We have numerous top closet shelves that could use an overhaul. In fact, really, every bedroom closet could use an overhaul! Since I like the pretty pattern on the boxes, I’m thinking they would look best in the craft/room office or our master bedroom closet. We actually did a craft room/office revamp last year around this time. For the most part, the room is still organized the same and (when we keep it up) actually looks pretty good. But, that pesky top closet shelf does NOT look good! You can see I tried to hide it with that big “AFTER” word! ;)   Craft RoomIt’s full of mismatched bins, plastic bags, and a bunch of general randomness that is definitely not the best on the eyes, and really, not even the most functional. And, don’t even get me started on our master bedroom closet! Oh my–it’s BAD! So, the bankers boxes will be getting put to good use at our house (stay tuned to see how/where we use them).

Could you use some of the stylish, functional, stackable Fellowes Bankers Boxes to help you get organized?…WIN IT!

National Nutrition Month — 5 Tips for Eating Healthy as a Family!

5 Tips for Eating Healthy as a Family

Did you know that March is National Nutrition month? I found that out this past week (along with a whole bunch of great information on shopping, cooking, & eating healthy with your family) while on a conference call with Michelle Dudash, registered dietician, Cordon Bleu-certified chef and author of Clean Eating for Busy Families. Michelle has joined forces with the Walmart Foundation to help raise awareness about the importance of nutrition education.  In fact, the Walmart Foundation is giving $6.7 million in grants to five national nonprofits that are providing thousands of students access to school breakfast and nutrition education to people of all ages. This is an important topic as only 25 percent of adults, and even fewer children, eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables each day!

During our call, Michelle shared some great tips for eating healthy as a family! So, here are the 5 top tips that I think are especially helpful in helping you shop, cook, and eat healthy:

5 Tips for Eating Healthy as a Family

Spring Clean Your Kitchen

As I’ve found with the pantry challenges, it is MUCH easier to meal plan when your pantry, fridge, and freezer are organized. When I can see what I have, it not only saves time & money, but I’m more apt to cook well balanced meals because it’s easier. Everything is conveniently located and I know what’s in there. In addition to getting the kitchen organized, Michelle also suggests tossing items with “unclean” ingredients (lots of processed foods with words you can’t pronounce), saving clear jars for great visual food storage, and showcasing the produce in your refrigerator so you can see it!

Get Kids in the Kitchen

Kids are actually much more likely to eat what they have helped prepared. I find that true with our boys. They often get really excited about what they’ve helped make and are always willing to try the end result. Thankfully, our boys aren’t too picky and will eat a really nice variety of food. But, I think this little trick would be great for those with kids who don’t like trying new foods or eating their veggies.
Another suggestion is of course to make fruits and veggies fun for kids! We LOVE doing this. From rainbow fruit muffin tin snacks & fun lunch ideas to Easter fruit bouquets and “dinosaur trees” (what we often call broccoli around here), eating healthy can be really fun for kids (and adults too ;) )!

Eat “Clean”

If you can read the label and know the ingredients, then it is clean. If there are ingredients that sound like lab experiments, it’s not clean! So, make sure the food that your family is eating is good for them by reading the labels as you buy and paying attention to the ingredients in your food. Don’t purchase things that have too many added ingredients that you can’t pronounce.

Prep Breakfast Ahead of Time

WAY too many kids and adults are not eating healthy breakfast–or skipping breakfast altogether. To make starting the day off right with a healthy breakfast, you can actually prep so many wonderful options ahead of time! Here are a few great ideas:

  • Hard Boiled Eggs. Eggs are a great source of protein & very economical. You can boil a whole pot of them on the weekend to have handy throughout the week!
  • Use leftover veggies from dinner. Instead of having to chop up items in the morning, just save them from dinner and pop them into scrambled eggs, omelets, frittatas, or breakfast burritos.
  • Breakfast Sundaes. Layer greek yogurt and frozen fruit like a parfait the night before. Then, in the morning sprinkle on a little granola or almonds! Super YUM!
  • Overnight oatmeal. This is SO easy. We’ve done just plain overnight oats and apple cinnamon overnight oatmeal. Super easy & you’ve got a hot breakfast ready to go when you wake up!

Meal Plan

Gah! I struggle with this! We sometimes do great with meal planning and then we’ll sometimes go for long stretches with no plan in place. Having a plan definitely helps us stay on track with eating healthy and saving money! Michelle suggests planning out how many dinners you will eat at home each week on Sunday. Make a meal plan and grocery shop around that. You can even make it easy and fun by doing things like having a baked potato bar night, create your own pizza night, taco bar night, etc. Plus, re-use your meal plans! Swap out recipes for the seasons, but keep it easy!

Thanks for all of these great tips, Michelle! These were good reminders for me!

What questions or tips do YOU have about healthy eating habits for families?

Boys and Bright Whites?! It can be done with #TideVividWhite!

White clothes

With three little boys in the house, things have this amazing way of getting messy. Like, really, really messy! Whether it’s dirt or mud from outside, crayon or markers, paint or spilled food, baby spit-up or other unpleasantries, there seems to be never-ending possibilities of “dangers” to clothes…especially the whites! So, perhaps one would think that we don’t have much white, but that’s not the case. I love the way the boys look in white. And, I love white baby things. Here’s just a little sampling of some of our favorite white clothes…White clothesThat walrus shirts is one of my all-time favorites! Now, a lot of people just go ahead and use bleach on their whites, but I’m not a big fan of bleach. It’s too harsh for my liking. Plus, when you have cute items (like that walrus shirt), you can’t just dump bleach in or the colors get ruined. So, I was excited when I was asked to try out the new Tide Vivid White + Bright . Something to keep the whites as bright as possible, but also safe on color?! Yes, please!Tide Vivid WhiteAs shocking as it may be, we actually have a white bath mat for our downstairs bathroom (which gets used the most). Needless to say, it gets dirty quickly! Recently, it was looking exceptionally bad. So, I was a little skeptical that it would actually come completely clean. Tide Vivid White to the test! Here’s the before & after: Tide Vivid White Before & AfterSOoooo much better! All the “ick” gone. The pictures really don’t even do it justice. The bathmat is SO bright. No hint of any staining or dinginess! Love that I can still have bright whites in a house of all boys!

Tide Vivid White + Bright keeps whites brighter longer allowing you to break the rules of white. Learn more about Tide’s whiteness regimen by visiting DailyCandy.
