Jake and the Never Land Pirates Birthday Party Food

Jake and the Never Land Pirates Party Food Table

Even after the Jake and the Never Land Pirates Birthday Party recap post, there is still so much to share! Since making “fun foods” is one of my favorite ways to get creative, I thought all of our pirate food (aka “buccaneer grub”) needed it’s own post! Jake and the Never Land Pirates Party Food TableOverall, it was actually really fairly simple. But, the little touches make it extra fun! Here’s the menu:

  • Gold nuggets (just plain ‘ole chicken nuggets)
  • Fresh veggie platter (the only thing that missed having it’s own fun name tag)
  • Scurvy sandwiches (subs cut into 2″ pieces with a little pirate flag)
  • Octopus dip (<— that’s a clickable link to get directions!)
  • Cannon balls (black olives)
  • Silly squid (hot dogs)
  • Fish & chips (goldfish crackers & plain potato chips)
  • Watermelon pirate ship fresh fruit salad
  • Seaweed Salad (pasta salad)

Pirate Party FoodThe fresh fruit & watermelon pirate ship was a big hit! It was inspired from numerous different versions I’ve seen floating around the internet (I’ve got some pinned on my Jake party Pinterest board). The process was fairly simple. We just cut a large section out of the watermelon (down to almost the halfway point horizontally), shaped the front a bit, and took out all fruit. We mixed the fruit salad together in a separate bowl, added it back into our hollowed out watermelon, and added our Bucky sails to make it a ship! :) Watermelon Pirate ShipThe fruit was a big hit! I didn’t even have one bite and we had NO leftovers! :) But, what really surprised me was what the hands-down kid favorite was…

The Silly Squid!! Pirate Party Food SquidI thought the kids might be a little weirded out by them and not eat them. But, I was SO wrong! The kids went crazy for these! It’s all that a few of the kiddos wanted! Too funny! They are SUPER easy to make. Just cut the hotdogs in half. Then, cut the halves into 4 vertical strips halfway up (giving you a “head” & “tentacles”). Place all the cut hotdogs into a pot of boiling water until the tentacles start curling (just a few minutes). Squid hotdogsWe also served up Pirate Punch (a variation of our favorite green punch recipe) and had some drinks on ice outside in an awesome cut whiskey barrel! Super fun!

Pirate Party Whiskey BarrelAnd, of course, last but not least, every pirate party needs a great pirate cake! The boys requested Bucky, so I had to deliver! I love the way everything turned out. Full details on making the cake will be coming soon. There are enough directions that it needs its own post! ;)   Jake & the Never Land Pirates Cake

Jake and the Never Land Pirates Birthday Party!

Pirate Party DIY Decor

Yo Ho, Mateys! We just celebrated the big boys’ birthdays in Jake and the Never Land Pirates style! ;) With the boys’ birthdays only one day apart, I’m all about doing a big joint birthday party (just like last year’s Wild Kratts party & the train party the year before that). Even though we don’t have cable, the boys have seen the fun Disney Junior show, “Jake and the Never Land Pirates”, and LOVE it! So, it was the perfect theme for their ages! Jake & the Never Land Pirates Birthday BoysHow cute are those newly turned 3 and 6-year-olds?! It was so fun to celebrate those sweet boys! And, they were so excited about everything! So, get ready for picture overload! Then, I’ll be sharing some more detailed posts soon with descriptions of how we made some of the decorations, activities, and of course, the cake! ;)

For the decor, I kept things a little more nautical/general pirate instead of an overwhelming amount of Jake merchandise. It made the decor easier to “DIY”, less expensive, and will be easier to reuse for other things! We signaled the party on the front entryway with our Minted pirate sign (“Fun Ahead: Enter if Ye Dare”), some paper anchors, and a big X marks the spot (just red Duck tape)! Pirate Party - Front Door

Indoor Pirate Decor

When you enter our house, you come into the living room/dining room. We’ve got a fair amount of open space there, so it’s a good starting point for the kids. Plus, it’s a good place to open gifts and sing Happy Birthday. The mantel and back of the piano were begging to get decorated too! ;) So, this was the indoor pirate decor scene: Pirate Party DecorHere are a few closeups of the different areas:

Pirate Party DIY DecorOf course, my favorite thing to set up was the “pirate loot” table, complete with fun treasure and dessert! The boys absolutely loved the cake! It definitely required some work, but was so worth it! (Full tutorial on the cake coming soon). Jake & The Never Land Pirates Dessert Table

Outdoor Pirate Decor

Given the gorgeous weather here in AZ this time of year, the majority of the party activities were done outside! We had SO much fun decorating our backyard! Some simple things like rope with fabric scraps added great color. And, with a pirate theme, simple signs made out of cardboard are easy & inexpensive to do. The birthday banner from Minted looked great on the patio too!  Outdoor DIY Pirate Party DecorThe majority of the decor was actually really, really simple. But, we did go all out on a few things. And, our hands-down favorite DIY decor project was the giant mast and Bucky sails (the name of the ship in the show). It honestly wasn’t too tough to make at all (full tutorial coming soon) and it added so much “character” outside! The boys think we need a Jolly Roger mast & sail now though, for dueling ships! I do have to say that the pirate decor outside is pretty fun! So, maybe we should just go ahead with that other sail and turn our backyard into a fun, tropical, pirate oasis! ;) Jake & the Never Land Pirates DIY mast and sailThe kids of course loved just running around playing, but we did have some fun organized activities! They were all so simple to do! First up, each kiddo got their pirate gear to dress up like Jake or Izzy! They LOVED this (and was impossible to get a picture of them all looking ;) !! Then, after yelling, “Yo Ho, Let’s Go!!”, we headed outside for all of our fun pirate adventure activities. DIY Jake & the Never Land Pirates GearAfter each activity, each kid received a gold doubloon for completing the task (just like when they get doubloons in the show). It all culminated with hunting for the “buried” treasure. They were SO excited when the found the “X”! The treasure area itself was mostly hidden by our large artichoke plant! Perfect! ;) Each kiddo could dig to get 3 more gold doubloons and two “jewel” necklaces”.  Jake & the Never Land Pirates Birthday Party ActivitiesBaby Brother even got in on all the fun! We found a simple 2-pack of pirate theme iron-on transfers. We put “pirate in training” on the front” with “Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of milk” on the back. To make things look even more piratey (and cooler for him on a warm day), we cut the sleeves with a jagged cut! That’s one cute pirate! ;) DIY Pirate OnesieSUCH a fun party! All the planning, work, and decorating was SO worth it! It was an absolutely fabulous night! Seeing their little faces light up is SO priceless. Everything was magical to them! And, of course, they absolutely couldn’t wait until it was time to get cake (and get their characters off the cake which was their present from us)! Birthday BoysPrecious moments! I know it won’t seem like long at all until these cute, fun parties aren’t “cool” anymore. My fun cakes might not seem so magical to that cute little 6 year old in another 6 years. So, this mama is soaking up every birthday year that we can celebrate with our little guys like this. We’re so thankful for all of our family & friends who helped us celebrate our boys!

And, thanks to you for sharing in all of this buccaneer birthday fun here!! :) Separate posts with details on making many of the items for the party are coming soon, so stay tuned!

Basketball Tournament Party #KettleMadness

Basketball Party Food

The madness that is college basketball in March is super fun! We’re big college sports fans at our house, so when I was asked to throw a basketball tournament party with Kettle Chips the answer was a very easy yes! We enjoyed watching quite a bit of basketball over the weekend, including that AWFUL injury sustained by Kevin Ware of Louisville. That was horrible! Aside from that little part though, we had a lot of fun and kicked off the weekend’s festivities with our basketball tournament party on Friday night! Basketball Party1Since we didn’t have any specific teams that we were cheering for (since our Huskers didn’t make the Tournament), I went with just a simple orange basketball theme for decor and foods. Just like in years past, we started off by making our kitchen table look like a basketball! It’s so easy to do using just black electrical tape! Basketball TableFor some simple basketball decorations, I just cut circles out of construction paper and drew the lines on to look like a basketball. Then, I hung those behind the table for a bit of extra fun. The kids also thought we needed some on the kitchen island. ;) The big star of the party though was the food!! #KettleMadness PartyI tried to keep things simple yet fun! We had our referee filled with veggies–perfect for dipping in the ranch dip or buffalo chicken dip, basketball oranges (clementines drawn on with a food-safe marker), two kinds of pizza (I added chopped pepperoni on the plain cheese to make it look a bit like a basketball), basketball cookies, and of course, lots of Kettle chips! Basketball Party FoodWith all the different flavors of Kettle chips, I decided to set them up as a sort of taste test. I knew the kids would probably prefer the more plain sea salt flavor. So, those were just placed in a large bowl within their reach. But, for everyone else, I set up all the other flavors in different bowls with the chip bags directly behind. In addition to the Sea Salt, we had Sea Salt & Vinegar, Backyard Barbeque, Salt & Fresh Ground Pepper, and Jalapeno!
Kettle Chips Taste TestThey were all good! I love the crunchiness of the Kettle chips, plus the natural ingredients used in making them. Did you know that Kettle Brand Potato Chips have been making their great-tasting, all-natural chips since 1982? Crazy huh?! My favorites were the Sea Salt & Vinegar and the Backyard Barbeque! The Jalapeno were good with some ranch dip, because they sure did pack some heat! Whew! All of our guests sampled and sampled and sampled! ;) Party GuestsThe kids got in on the action too! They polished off their fair share of basketball oranges, chips, and pizza. But, of course, their favorite was the basketball cookies! ;) After all that eating, they burned off some energy while playing some balloon basketball. All you need are orange balloons and a sharpie to draw the basketball lines on! Basketball Party_KidsOh yah…and there was actual basketball watching done too! Well, by the adults anyway. The kids were much too busy playing with their balloons and snacking to notice! ;) March MadnessA good time was had by all–and some lucky kiddos got to stay up much past their bedtime! Everyone got to pick out their favorite bag of Kettle chips to take home (plus their basketball balloons, of course)! Basketball Party FavorsIt was such fun! We love having an excuse to get together with friends. And, the College Basketball Tournament is always a good one! We’ve done a party like this every year for the past 3 or 4 years! Super fun! Basketball Party Before & AfterStay tuned for directions on making the basketball cookies if you’re interested. If you’d like more info or fun ideas from Kettle Chips, be sure to follow along with them  on Facebook and/or on Twitter. Also, for the next few weeks, you can get a $1 off Kettle Chips coupon (on the right sidebar). That should make the chips less than $2 a bag! :) To see more from my shopping trip, you can check out my google+ story here.

Pirate Party Decor from Minted

Screen shot 2013-03-29 at 11.12.51 PM

Have you heard of Minted? It’s a global community of independent graphic designers and an online store that prints and sells the best of their designs in the form of paper goods. And do they ever have awesome paper goods–everything from wedding invitations & birth announcements to birthday invitations and party decor! Seriously, there are so many great products! So, when I had the opportunity to work with Minted and choose a product, I thought it would be a tough decision. I could use some new business cards. But while browsing, I discovered the Pirate Party Decor and immediately knew I wanted to check it out! This year’s party theme for the boys is Jake and the Never Land Pirates. So, how perfect is this?!…Screen shot 2013-03-29 at 11.12.51 PMDoesn’t it look adorable? For added fun, the text on all the banners & signs is customizable. You can change sizes, wording, etc. to make it fit your particular party. I LOVE that! The site was really easy to navigate through the process and the shipping time was fast. I was also impressed with the packaging. All the paper products were individually wrapped. Nothing bent, folded, wrinkled, or creased! Minted Pirate Party SuppliesI opened a few things just to get a better look. Plus the boys were SO excited! When Big Brother saw the island he exclaimed, “Whoa, cool, Mom! Captain Hook’s ship and Pirate Island”! Then, Little Brother saw the gold piece and squealed, “Gold Boon” (gold doubloon)! Pirate party productsI’m really excited about the birthday banner as well. I went with a simple message of “Happy Birthday, Boys!” The banner comes with the twine needed to hang it up too! Super nice! Minted Pirate Birthday BannerThe party is next weekend and I can’t wait to see how it all comes together! So stay tuned for lots of buccaneer birthday fun to come! In the meantime, if you’re looking for any kind of announcements, invitations, business cards or fun party decor, be sure to check out Minted!

New Year’s Party Drink Bucket (& Lowe’s Gift Card Giveaway) #LowesCreator

New Year's Party Bucket

Now that Christmas is behind us (I hope yours was fabulous by the way), we’re gearing up for New Year’s! As a #LowesCreator, my challenge this month was to “set the mood for a sparkly New Year’s celebration”. Hmmm…I don’t normally decorate for New Year’s (we usually always still have all of our Christmas decor still up), but we almost always have a little family fun time. In recent years past (post having the kiddos), New Year’s celebrations usually include some sort of family game night, fun appetizers/dips, and some various fun drinks. So, what a better celebration item than a year-customized sparkly New Year’s party drink bucket?! When “sparkle” gets thrown around, I immediately think of something glittery. I’d seen some of my fellow #lowescreator bloggers finding some awesome Valspar glitter spray paint. Alas, my two local Lowe’s have yet to carry it. So, I improvised with some other Valspar spray paint & glitter! To make your own New Year’s party drink bucket, you’ll need just a few simple supplies:

Metal Bucket (found in the paint area at Lowe’s)
Metal house numbers (found at Lowe’s for less than $1.50/number)
White Spray Paint
Glitter (if you don’t have glitter spray paint)
Ribbon (I used sparkly gold)

*If you find a good glitter spray paint, you could even spray paint the entire bucket to give it some extra sparkle. I decided to just make the numbers sparkly though. By getting the numbers this year, you’d only need to spend an extra $1 or so for the next few years to customize it for each New Year’s.

Completing the project is super easy! The longest part is just waiting for the spray paint to dry! :) To complete your customized New Year’s party bucket, you’ll want to just lay out the house numbers & spray paint them. You can really use any color, but I wanted white with white & gold glitter. I thought that would pop a bit more against the silver bucket. To glitz up the numbers, I spray painted them white and immediately put on a generous helping of white & gold glitters. Note–if you’re doing it this way, mix your glitters first. I had two different bottles and different colors stuck better in different places (hence the uneven look). Or, of course, you can save a step if you can find a good glitter spray paint! And, if you’re metal bucket is shiny at all, you’ll probably want to paint both sides. Once dry, just lace some ribbon through the nail holes on the numbers & tie them to the handle part on the bucket. Once the “2013” numbers are attached, just add in ice and your favorite New Year’s drinks! Then, let the New Year’s celebrating begin! ;)

Cheers!!!
