College Football Tailgate Saturday: Great Football Gifts {Wrap-Up}

Burlap Footballs

Wow! I can’t believe 12 weeks of our fun College Football link party have come and gone. My husband is mourning today as the last Saturday of college football for months (minus bowl games, of course). So, today will be the last entry in the series and you can link up posts through tomorrow. It’s been so fun seeing the variety of great food, parties, and projects linked up! Thanks to all of you who participated, commented, and shared! I’m definitely planning on bringing it back next fall.

With Christmas coming, I thought I’d feature some fun football projects that might make great gifts for the favorite football fan in your life! :)

Popsicle Stick Photo Puzzles

Popsicle Stick Puzzles

Looking for an inexpensive handmade stocking stuffer or gift for little ones? I think these Popsicle Stick Photo Puzzles are perfect! Back in November, I shared them at Sweet Rose Studio, as part of her Holiday Handmade Series. So, now it’s time to share them here in case you missed it! :)

This idea isn’t a new one–I’ve seen variations of this idea all over the place & have had it on my “to-make” list for ages! And, I’m so glad I’ve finally made some! Aside from being easy and inexpensive, the beauty of the project is that you can make it so personalized and really perfect for almost any age. You could use family photos, post cards from favorite places, print outs of characters, sports teams logos, old flashcards, etc. Depending on the difficulty you’d like the puzzle to be, you could vary the size of the popsicle sticks (using the larger ones for younger kids), use more complex images, or even make the puzzle two sided! The possibilities really are endless!

Here’s the “how-to”:

Supplies:

- 16 popsicle sticks (per puzzle)

- various 4x6 or small postcard size images

- Mod podge & brush

- X-ACTO knife

- baggies (for storage)

Directions:

For each puzzle, lay out a series of 16 popsicle sticks so that the sticks are touching. To prevent shifting/sliding, you could place a piece of scotch tape across the sticks.

Apply mod podge to the back of the 4 x 6 image you are using & place on the sticks. Then, go over the top with a light coat of mod podge and let dry.

Once dry, carefully use an X-ACTO knife to cut in between each popsicle stick. I definitely recommend doing this on a mat of some kind and also, recommend cutting from the back since it’s easier to see the divisions between the sticks! That’s it! Then, you have AWESOME personalized, unique, handmade puzzles perfect for little boys (and girls) of just about any age! :)

What handmade projects are YOU working on?

Christmas Book Advent

Wombat Ornament

We’re starting a new tradition this year and it’s one that I’m SO excited about: Christmas Book Advent. We always read Christmas books this time of year, so that’s nothing new. In fact, here’s last year’s post on some of our favorite Christmas books. Over the year, I’ve added to our Christmas book collection. So, this year, I’m wrapping them up & we’re opening one each day!The idea is inspired by the fabulous Alison over at Oopsey Daisy! When I saw her book advent posts last year, I knew it was something I wanted to start! I absolutely love her idea of doing some sort of activity related to the book each day. Not sure that I’ll be quite as on the ball as she is, but I already have some activities planned!

Here’s our list:

  1. Snowbear’s Christmas Countdown
  2. Wombat Divine
  3. The Polar Express
  4. Jesus, Me, and My Christmas Tree
  5. Santa’s Little Helper
  6. Snowmen at Night
  7. Bear Stays Up for Christmas
  8. Mortimer’s Christmas Manger
  9. The Mitten 20th Anniversary Edition
  10. How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
  11. Reindeer Christmas (Paula Wiseman Books)
  12. Snowmen at Christmas
  13. The Christmas Star
  14. Humphrey’s First Christmas
  15. Froggy’s Best Christmas
  16. Frosty the Snowman
  17. Merry Christmas, Curious George
  18. The Little Drummer Mouse
  19. If You Take a Mouse to the Movies
  20. What Is Christmas?
  21. A Charlie Brown Christmas (Running Press Miniatures)
  22. ???? We need one more book! I want something about gingerbread men or houses or something. Any ideas?
  23. The Night Before Christmas

So far, the plan is to make “snow paint” snowmen for Snowmen at Night. I’m also planning a Christmas tree, star, reindeer, and nativity crafts to go with some of the books. For a couple others (like The Polar Express and How the Grinch Stole Christmas!), I have those planned on weekends so we can read the book and then have a family movie night! :) And, given my love of wombats (yes, really), we’ll hang our wombat ornament after reading Wombat Divine. And, yes, we really have a wombat ornament. :) We bought it on our trip to Australia and I LOVE it! See?!After gathering up all my books, I decided to number them. Some are totally just randomly put in, others I knew I wanted to read on specific days. Like, I wanted to start with Snowbear’s Christmas Countdownand talk about how we are doing a Christmas countdown too. And, it’s been a tradition since Big Brother’s first Christmas that we read Twas The Night Before Christmas, so I knew that would be last. Then, I wanted to mix up some of the more religious ones and more Santa-themed ones to have a nice mix. I like having them numbered and listed out too, so that way if I want to switch days, it’s easy to do so! :) Where to get 24 Christmas Books (aside from tradition in-store/on-line retailers)?

I started building a collection over time. This will be Big Brother’s 5th Christmas and so we’ve been collecting a couple books a year the past 5 Christmas seasons. If you don’t have the time/money to invest on it this year, you could always do a 5 days of Christmas or 12 Days of Christmas book advent.

1. Thrift Stores! Last weekend I hit up a used bookstore by our house and came home with 9 books for just over $27 with tax! So, at an average cost of just $3/book for nice, hardback titles like The Polar Express and How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, I thought it was a great deal!

2. eBay. As I alluded to in the Cyber Monday post, I also purchased a few books on eBay to add to the collection. :) If you find the right auction or Buy It Now price, you can score some REALLY sweet deals!

3. Scholastic Book Orders. If you have kiddos in school (even at some preschools) or know an elementary school teacher, you should be able to get in on a Scholastic Book Order. These were one of my favorite things in elementary school and I was practically giddy when Big Brother came home from preschool with one! :)

4. Library. I still don’t have a full 24 book collection that’s ours to keep. Just this morning, we hit up the library to check out Christmas books. Our library only lets you check out 5 holiday books at a time, but they aren’t due back until the 20th. So, that’s good for us.

Now, I can’t wait for December 1st to get everything started! :)

Do you have any special traditions involving Christmas books? What books are your favorite?

Christmas Cards from Shutterfly {+ a GIVEAWAY!!}

Shutterfly Christmas Card A

Wow! So, I’m not nearly as “on the ball” this year with Christmas Cards. Last year at this time, I not only had already designed the cards, but already received them! Plus, I have other photo gifts yet to do too. So, I will be busy working on Shutterfly in the upcoming days!

Shutterfly.comThis will mark the 5th year of giving the grandparents & great-grandparents Collage Calendars for Christmas! We started doing that for Big Brother’s first Christmas and everyone loved them! So, it’s become a traditional gift that everyone has come to expect! And, we’ve done Christmas cards every year since Big Brother was born as well! It’s impossible to top last year’s card, but I still think we have some pretty cute options. And, in a rare twist for us, we actually have two sets of pictures that are great, so I’m finding it EXTRA difficult to decide. So, this is where I want your help! :) Let me know which one you like best.

Cyber Monday!

So, this is the notorious shopping weekend of the year! Did you do any shopping on Friday? I hit two stores on foot and two stores on-line. And, in addition to Black Friday, we now have Cyber Monday to look forward to! Apparently, this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday following Thanksgiving are expected to be the top online selling dates this year! Will you be buying anything? Any specific deals you are hoping to find?

Or, will you be selling anything?! If you haven’t jumped on the eBay selling bandwagon, there is still time to make some money before Christmas! For tips, Fedex shares a list of online selling trends. Plus, eBay has a “Holiday Hotlist” that would be beneficial to check out. With so many people looking for deals in the next few days, this would be a GREAT time to get some items listed for sale! A beginner? No problem! Check out some of these eBay beginner seller tips! With the new gifts that will be coming in at the end of the month, now is a great time to purge a bit. It’s such a win-win situation all the way around–you clear out your unwanted items, trashing some, donating some to charity, and selling some! So, your house gets “cleaner”, you helped out charities, and you can make some extra cash! Niiiice!

But, if you’re not interested in selling anything right now, remember that you might find some great Cyber Monday deals on eBay too! In fact, I just purchased two books for an upcoming project (I can’t wait to share with you), at GREAT prices! One of them was just $1!! :) Sweet!

So, what’s on YOUR “Cyber Week” agenda?

College Football Saturday Tailgate: Husker Football Crafts & Treats

Hope you’re enjoying a great Thanksgiving weekend! After all the great food, we’ve been enjoying all the great football on this weekend! Nebraska played it’s last regular season game yesterday, at home, against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Given our embarrassing, mistake-ridden performance against Michigan the week before, we weren’t sure what to expect. Thankfully, we were pleasantly surprised! In what is slated to become Nebraska’s new Big Ten rival, we were happy to win the first annual “Farmageddon”! :)

Because of Thanksgiving, our “homegating” consisted of lots of leftovers. So, no new fun ideas today. Instead, since we won’t be watching our Huskers play again until the bowl game (hopefully on New Year’s Day), I decided to leave you with all my favorite Nebraska football ideas (all easily adapted to your team, of course)!
