Front Door Makeover Tips

I’m SO excited to share some front door makeover tips with you today (and reveal our new front door) as part of a sponsored campaign with Therma-Tru Benchmark, available exclusively at Lowe’s. Front Door Makeover TipsWho doesn’t love a good makeover story?! There’s something satisfying about “before & after” photos – especially when they’re your own. Over the past few years, we’ve been doing a number of improvements and refreshes on the house (including a mini kitchen makeoverbathroom vanity makeover, and new paint & flooring (wood tile that I’m IN LOVE WITH) throughout the whole downstairs).  The most recent improvement is our new front door and it makes such a difference as you enter our house! Here’s what our front door looked like before: Front Door OldYou can see that there were definitely major signs of wear and damage. We’re pretty sure that this was the original front door (and this house is almost 20 years old) and there was just nothing overly appealing about it. There was not only some fading and wear on the door, but there was significant cracking around the door frame. No good!

The inside wasn’t much better either. We’re slowly trying to get rid of all the ’90s/early 2000s orange-y oak look through the house. With our new floors and paint, the living room now is a lot of white, black, and grays. So, we really wanted to make a change to the look from the inside as well!  Front Door Makeover BeforeIt just definitely doesn’t go with the look we wanted with all the other updates. Originally we had considered painting the door (though that’s not a super simple undertaking either). But with all the damage to the door frame area (and age of the door), we decided that a new door was the best way to go. So we ended up with a  Therma-Tru Benchmark door exclusively available at Lowe’s. If you want to see the whole door-buying process (along with various tips), check out our previous post here –> Top things to consider when buying a new door

There was definitely more to the process than we had originally anticipated (and we highly HIGHLY recommend having it installed versus attempting to “DIY” this one).  But we are SO happy with the results! Grey Front DoorDoesn’t it look SO much better?! For comparison, here is the side by side: Front Door Makeover Before & AfterI LOVE it! Everything about it looks nicer! And not only does it look nicer, but the door is higher quality (and all of our door jam issues were fixed with the install). Fiberglass Therma-Tru Benchmark doors  give you the look of a wood door without many of the issues (warping, splitting, rotting, etc) that wood has. Another benefit of fiberglass is that it’s energy efficient. We need that energy efficiency in the hot summers here (in Arizona). So, I’m thrilled with the results!

I also LOVE that when you buy your new door, there are a variety of styles & colors to choose from – Mahogany, Oak, or Smooth Surface, with various paint and color stain options depending on your selection. We opted for this Smooth Surface look where we could do a different color on the inside and outside of the door. I absolutely love the results! Since we have a custom security door on the outside (it’s a very common Arizona desert thing), the change to the inside look of the door is even more spectacular for me than the outside. Black front doorEven one of the boys commented, “hey Mommy, that door matches so much better in here”. HA! I agree!!! And I love it! We’re going to be re-painting the stairs’ banister black and white soon to really finish off the room! It’s amazing how much just changing the front door really changes the whole feel of our front room!

So, if you’re thinking about making a front door change, I HIGHLY recommend it! Here’s some tips to consider as you plan that…

  1. Look for a good quality door like the  Therma-Tru Benchmark Doors, exclusively avaiable at Lowe’s. We liked the variety of options and the high-quality, energy-efficient fiberglass doors. Plus, since the door arrives finished, you don’t need to paint or stain the door yourself!
  2. Consider both the looks YOU like and the look of the neighborhood. For instance, VERY few people have glass panels on their doors in our area. It’s just not really “a thing” here. So, we went with a sold look instead (which is what I liked best anyway).
  3. Consider color! Now, we didn’t really go for anything colorful (like red or yellow or something). But, the gray and black was definitely something different than just a wood look! It’s ok to go more bold!
  4. Make a vision board first, especially if you’re not sure. Look at your color options, then consider the look of your entry room and your design style. You can browse Pinterest to get some ideas and decide on a look that works for you.
  5. Consider the timing! A custom door like this could take some time- you most likely wouldn’t walk into the store and have a new door tomorrow. For a special order door, you’ll need to go through the ordering process to customize your door. Then the door will take at least a few weeks to be made and then you have installation. Because we had the security door to deal with too, install took 7 hours at our house – plus painting all the trim afterward. So do keep that in mind as you plan!

The end result is SO worth it though! If you need some more ideas or planning help, be sure to check out the “what to consider” and “how to guide” section on the Benchmark site to help you!
