What could be more fun for Star Wars fans than building their very own droid? Not too much! So, we’re thrilled to share details about the littleBits Droid Inventor Kit – the PERFECT educational Star Wars S.T.E.A.M. gift (Thanks to littleBits for sending us a kit to review)!
During our #ThorRagnarokEvent press trip last month, we were treated to a fun lunch with littleBits. We learned about the littleBits company (including their MANY awards, their mission & their products) and I am VERY impressed! As a science teacher, I’m a BIG fan of toys & products that help teach S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) in a fun & engaging way. And, littleBits does this in a phenomenal way! In addition to learning about the company, we got time to play with their newest kit – the litttleBits Droid Inventor Kit (affiliate link)! And it’s AWESOME!!!! As a huge Star Wars fan, well…it’s no secret that I love Star Wars things. So, a combination of  STEAM & Star Wars is the perfect match in my mind, making the littleBits Droid Inventor Kit one of my top gifts for kids this year!!

My boys saw this ad and were immediately excited! After getting to play with the kit and experience it first-hand, I can say with confidence that your favorite little engineers/creators/tinkerers/Star Wars fans will LOVE this kit as a gift. My boys are going to flip when they open this on Christmas morning!

littleBits Star Wars Droid Inventor Kit

The kit normally retails for $99.99 (but see below for special deals) and is very easy to use! Here’s what the kit includes:

  • 6 bits – control hub, motor, proximity sensor, power bit,  servo bit, and wire bit  (for those not familiar with littleBits products, these bits can also link up to bits from other littleBits kits for fun inventing, creating, and customizing)
  • Droid parts
  • Customizable stickers (red, blue, black, and white)
  • Free droid inventor training app (with 16+ missions in the app)

The whole bits system that littleBits products are based on are SO easy to use! I was so impressed with learning about how the pieces work together! My boys’ school has recently been doing a lot with teaching coding (in the form of block code) and the littleBits reminded me a lot of that. So, I think there will be some nice educational overlap there for my kids!

Then, once you have your bits connected and the droid built, the app is so much fun!!! I mean, how cool is it to “use the Force” to make something move?! Well, you can with this!!!! With the 16 missions, you’re sure to have fun making R2-D2 do all kinds of things! Seriously, this is SO cool! My “science teacher, Star Wars fan” self very VERY highly recommends this as a great gift idea!! And not only is this a great educational, STEAM -focused product, but littleBits is also launching a global inventor movement.

littleBits Droid Inventor Competition

On November 15th, littleBits launced a global inventor movement and competition. The challenge invites kids, families, and Star Wars fans—residing in the US, UK, and Canada – to share their own unique Droid creations with the global inventor community. The competition will run from November 15, 2017 to January 10, 2018. Fans and families will be able to submit their own leading-edge Droid design creations, judged by Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Daisy Ridley (the actress who portrays Rey in the current Star Wars trilogy) and Kelly Marie Tran (the actress who portrays Rose Tico in Star Wars: The Last Jedi) alongside Ayah Bdeir (founder and CEO of littleBits) and Kathleen Kennedy (president of Lucasfilm).
