When planning vacations, we love seeking out places that are not only fun for families with kids but have educational opportunities too. So, we’re thrilled to partner with Visit Williamsburg to share some great family travel ideas! Did you know that Greater Williamsburg actually includes three historic areas (Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown), that are all located very close to each other?! As lovers of history, a visit to the Williamsburg area is perfect! Between Colonial Williamsburg, Historic Jamestowne, Jamestown Settlement, the Yorktown Battlefield, and the Yorktown Victory Center, there is SO much history to experience!

History really does come to life in these famous locales, with many reenactments and interactive experiences. At Colonial Williamsburg, you can even be part of RevQuest – an interactive spy game! My boys would LOVE this! Then with Historic Jamestowne and Jamestown Settlement, visitors can experience America’s first permanent English colony including a church dating back to the 1690s! At Historic Jamestowne there is an archaeological dig with actual excavation sites, letting visitors get up close and personal. There’s even special programs for kids! Then, at the Jamestown Settlement you’ll find full recreations of the colonists’ experience! You can board replica ships that the colonists came in on or visit a Native American Village where kids can play in a tepee or carve out a canoe. Plus there’s various cooking demonstrations and actors wandering around in authentic period costumes!

But while historical sites might come to mind first when thinking about Williamsburg, the area has a whole array of fun attractions for the whole family! From rollercoasters & ziplines to water parks & pirate boats, Greater Williamsburg has it! Here’s just a little sampling:

  • Great Wolf Lodge
  • Water Country U.S.A
  • Yorktown Pirate Adventure Sail
  • Ripley’s Believe It or Not!
  • Busch Gardens Williamsburg

Super awesome places and all in one area! When I was 11, I experienced a Busch Gardens for the first time and absolutely loved it. Combine rollercoasters and animals for me in one place and it’s a BIG hit!!! I know my boys would LOVE it! They would also love some water park fun and who wouldn’t love a sail with pirates?!

And as if all of that wasn’t enough, there are also a bunch of fabulous activities for the outdoor enthusiasts! With thousands of acres of woodlands and wetlands (including THREE different National Park sites), families can explore beautiful flora and fauna in the area through various tours, hikes, biking, or even kayaking!

Doesn’t it sound great?! Raise your hand if you want to start planning a trip to Williamsburg! A visit here is high on our must-do family travel list! It’s not only something that I know the kids would like, but it seems perfect for a multi-generational family trip! My dad is a HUGE American History buff, but also loves a good water park and rollercoaster. So, Greater Williamsburg would be a great family travel destination for us! With everything to do in the area, it’s definitely a place you could keep coming back to again and again!

  1. Oh my gosh, that looks awesome!

I only touched on my American history on the recent visit through visits to Philly and DC, but this looks like a very cool way to engage with it.
