Simple DIY Raised-Bed GardenA few weeks ago I shared all about the raised-bed garden project we were planning as part of a partnership with Lowe’s. And, I’m pleased to say that it’s all done, complete with happy little herbs and vegetable plants! Planting and prepping was SO much easier in the raised bed than our previous gardening experience right in the ground (Arizona has some seriously hard soil). Building a simple raised-bed garden really is the perfect weekend project – taking just a few hours to complete. In fact, I think we may have spent just as long deciding on what to plant as we did building the bed! Raised-Bed Garden InstructionsBuilding our garden bed was very straightforward and simple thanks to the FREE online video course from Lowe’s & Craftsy! The video course walks you through each part of the process (in a visual way)– so you not only know exactly what you’re looking for when you head to Lowe’s to buy your supplies, but you get visual step-by-step instructions for building. And really, the supply list is so minimal – just boards (we used 2 x 8 x 8 non-treated redwood), exterior wood screws, and galvanized steel hardware cloth. Then you just need the dirt and plants or seeds to fill it with. We loved the ease of the course (7 HD video lessons with anytime, anywhere access) and the ease of the project in general. You can then tailor the project to suit your space and needs. For example, we opted to forgo the built-in irrigation system because we didn’t have good lines available in that area. But, for those that want to do it, the course walks you through the whole process of doing that.

DIY Garden Area Before & AfterI’m so pleased with the way it turned out! We really breathed some new life into a rather neglected and boring corner in our backyard. Whoever did the design and landscaping of our yard (we’re not the original owners), had some questionable planning/design skills. So we have some rather odd rocky areas in our yard. This space gets good sun & so was the perfect spot for our raised-bed garden. And, doesn’t it look SO much better now?! DIY Raised Garden BedWe added some stepping stones around the garden for easy watering/harvesting access. And, we also added a planter with some sunflowers (the boys really wanted to see if we could get them to grow “HUGE”). We’ve got some delicious herbs (like chocolate mint, lemon thyme, garlic chives, and cilantro) and vegetables like peppers and tomatoes. So fingers crossed we can keep everything alive during our crazy Phoenix heat! DIY Raised-Bed Garden

So, are you ready to build your own raised-bed garden?!

Simply register for the FREE  Craftsy course through Lowes.com and get started! It’s so simple! And, for those of you with kids, it’s something really great to have them help with! The boys have been so excited to go water & check on the plants!

  1. Raised beds sound perfect for AZ. And so much easier to work in. We have a VERY large garden. Most of it in raised beds. Only the peas, beans, potatoes and things like cucumbers and melons are in the ground. It makes weeding so much easier and being able to mow between sure is nice. Your bed looks great.

    1. Thanks so much, Carol! I bet you have such an awesome garden! I’m always amazed at the gardens when we’re back in Nebraska. So fun!! Hope all is well! 🙂
