Disney’s newest animated feature, Big Hero 6, hits theaters today (Friday, November 7th). Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, it’s an action-packed movie that is filled with a lot of heart!
Here’s the overview:
From Walt Disney Animation Studios, the team behind “Frozen” and “Wreck-It Ralph,” comes “Big Hero 6,” an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between Baymax (voice of Scott Adsit), a plus-sized inflatable robot, and prodigy Hiro Hamada (voice of Ryan Potter). When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo and catapults Hiro into the midst of danger, he turns to Baymax and his close friends adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago (voice of Jamie Chung), neatnik Wasabi (voice of Damon Wayans Jr.), chemistry whiz Honey Lemon (voice of Genesis Rodriguez) and fanboy Fred (voice of T.J. Miller). Determined to uncover the mystery, Hiro transforms his friends into a band of high-tech heroes called “Big Hero 6.”
Isn’t Baymax SO cute?! Everyone is going to fall in love with him! Get ready for some “sick” jokes and an adorable new way to “give rock”!
Movie Review:
As the mom of all boys, I’ve been really excited about this movie and loved it!! The older two boys (4 and 7) have been very into all things “superhero” lately. But, we haven’t let them see any of the live-action superhero films (like Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America, etc). Although we love those movies, we just feel like they’re not age appropriate for our young kids yet. So, Big Hero 6 is GREAT for our family. It gives my boys some fun superhero adventure, while being much more age appropriate for them! With a 13 year-old lead character (Hiro) and an even older supporting cast, I think the target age group on the movie is probably just a tad higher than our boys – like the 8 to 13ish+ crowd. But, there wasn’t really anything at all that I found was inappropriate for our kids. We took both the 4 and 7 year old to the screening and we’re already planning to go again this weekend. If you’re looking for a Disney movie to sort of compare it to, I’d say The Incredibles is the obvious choice. But the two movies are really very different and as much as I enjoy The Incredibles, I think I liked Big Hero 6 better. 
My husband (who is a BIG superhero movie fan) turned to me as soon as the screening was over and said, “that was really good”. And, I agree! It has all the pieces you sort of expect or want from a superhero film, while still being cute, animated, and more age appropriate for younger kids. This really is one movie that the WHOLE family can truly enjoy!
That’s not to say though that there aren’t moments of violence or intense action. True to typical superhero storylines, there is a somewhat surprising and rather scary-looking villain. And, some of the scenes with him are really intense. Both boys had their hands over their eyes a few times anticipating what might happen. 
Another thing to note is that the movie does deal with loss and death. No spoilers here, but I was actually really surprised at the character(s) that die. If you’ve recently lost someone or that’s a sensitive topic for your kids, this might be one to proceed with caution. Yes, I got all teary-eyed (because I’m a crier like that) and the boys both said that two parts were really sad. It prompted some good discussion at home. But, true to Disney form, everything ends on a positive note. 
As the mom of boys, what I especially loved about the movie is that NONE of the characters actually have superpowers. There was NO accident at the lab; no one got injected with some weird serum; there were no spider bites. Instead, the characters in this movie are all using their brains and inventing. By experimenting, tinkering, and building, they’re putting their knowledge to the test and creating incredible things. Baymax is a robot created by Hiro’s brother. Hiro creates some incredible little microbots. The other characters are constantly experimenting with new their inventions (it shows that girls are smart inventors too). And, they become “superheroes” by putting their brains and inventive powers to work. I LOVE THIS! As a former science teacher and mom, I want my kids to see the importance of learning and the power of using your mind to create, experiment, and invent. And, Big Hero 6 shows all of that and really celebrates the importance of STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and math). It’s something I think kids don’t see enough, especially in pop-culture things like movies. So, I really love that aspect of the film.
And, of course, everyone really loved Baymax. He’s just so huggable, lovable, and kind. I think everyone could use a Baymax in their lives!
