Tomorrow, October 1st, Disney’s The Little Mermaid will release for the first time on Diamond Edition Blu-ray/DVD combo pack! A whole new generation will have the chance to head under the sea and make Ariel part of their world. And, for the rest of us, it’s an opportunity to relive the magic of the original 1989 release in a beautifully digitally restored fashion. Disney's The Little Mermaid Diamond EditionIncluded in the release are some great bonus features, like:

  • Part of Your World music video performed by Carly Rae Jepsen
  • Crab-E-OKE Sing-Along
  • Deleted Character: Harold The Merman
  • @DisneyAnimation: Go Behind the Scenes with Top Disney Animators
  • Part of Her World: Jodi Benson’s Voyage to New Fantasyland
  • Howard’s Lecture
  • Under the Scene: The Art of Live-Action Reference
  • …and more! (including all the original DVD bonus features)

We actually got to see the “Howard’s Lecture” bonus feature before our interviews with Jodi Benson (voice of Ariel) and writers/directors Ron Clements & John Musker. For those not familiar, Howard Ashman really can be credited with the whole Disney renaissance that was kicked off with The Little Mermaid. He wrote all the songs for the movie and went on to write the songs for Beauty & the Beast and some for Aladdin before his death in 1991. So, hearing the passionate lecture he gave to a group of Disney animators working on the film is a great bonus feature on the dvd. It’s so sad that he passed all-too-soon in 1991 (at just 40 years old). And, you get a sense for that in the emotion shown by Ron & John in this bonus feature. I can only imagine the genius that Howard would have contributed to other Disney films if he was still with us.

The other features that I especially love on the Diamond Edition dvd are the behind-the-scenes animation pieces. I LOVE behind-the-scenes stuff and seeing what goes into making a film. The Disney Animation segment is great because it not only gives you a glimpse of some fun behind-the-scenes things (like my trip to the Disney Animation Research Library did ), but it also shows you the passion and love that these people have for what they do. It’s so fun! And, I loved the Live-Action Reference piece. I honestly had NO idea that they did so much with live actors in order to make the animation look “real”. It was fun to hear & see the live-action reference actress for Ariel on screen. I think that the character Ariel we have all come to know and love really looks like a combination of her & Jodi Benson!

The restored movie looks (and sounds) great in its digitally remastered state. But, definitely don’t skip the bonus features on this one. They really are fun to see and give you a great look into some wonderful pieces of Disney history. The Little Mermaid Diamond EditionAnd, don’t forget that with the release of the movie, there are a whole bunch of new, great Little Mermaid products hitting store shelves. Given the dates, I think we may see a good number of cute Ariels this Halloween. And, there may be some special mermaid items on Christmas wish-lists this holiday season!

Such a good song! Remember, you can make this “part of your world” at home (or on the go with the digital movie copy) when The Little Mermaid hits stores on October 1stFor more, you can follow The Little Mermaid on Twitter and on Facebook! And, you can even order your copy through Amazon (affilate link) right now –> The Little Mermaid (Three-Disc Diamond Edition)
