So, did you watch the Big Game tonight? What started out rather one-sided certainly turned interesting. Black outs, game delays, and an almost game winning comeback. Crazy stuff. We didn’t really care who won (though were cheering for the Ravens since they had a former Nebraska player–their punter. Go Big Red! 😉 ), but it was one last excuse to have some football fun. With the steps I’ve been taking toward getting healthier though, I didn’t want to completely undo everything with a spread of traditional super unhealthy football eats! So, what’s a girl to do? Come up with a healthier Big Game menu! We still wanted some of the traditional football finger foods & flavors, but just with maybe a few less calories, carbs, and processed junk. So, for the main dish of sorts, I decided on making a healthier dip than many options out there…turkey sloppy joe dip!
While it might not be the most appetizing in appearance, it was really quite tasty! And, definitely healthier than other game day options! I used some of the new Classico canned crushed tomatoes now available at Walmart (which are 100% all-natural and packed fresh with no preservatives) and other vegetables; the turkey was super lean; and the dish was overall very low in carbs, plus gluten-free for the win!
Turkey Sloppy Joe Dip
- approx 1 lb. lean ground turkey (I used 93%)
- 1/2 of medium sweet onion, chopped
- 1/2 C chopped celery
- 1/2 can of Classico crushed tomatoes (approx 2 cups)
- 2 T Worcestershire sauce
- 1 T dijon mustard
- 1 T garlic powder
- 1 T brown sugar
- 2 T chili powder
- 4 ounces (half package) cream cheese (use 1/3 fat or fat free)
- 1/2 C shredded cheddar
- In a large skillet coated with cooking spray, start to brown the onions & celery. Then, add the turkey to the onions & celery and cook over medium high heat until no longer pink.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes. Then, stir in all other seasonings and sauces (except for the cheeses). Let simmer until a majority of the liquid has boiled off.
- Once most of the liquid has boiled off, stir in the cream cheese. Lastly, add in the shredded cheese.
- Serve warm with your celery or your favorite gluten-free chips!
But, the dip wasn’t all! We had to have some other options too, plus a place to put it. So, for our one last football party of the season, we even turned the table into a football! 😉 It was SO easy with just some white duct tape! The boys loved it! It was great for our healthier football spread and our fun football dishes. In addition to the sloppy joe dip & chips, we had fresh veggies with a greek yogurt ranch dip, buffalo cauliflower bites, and snickers-apple salad (More recipes are coming soon!). Utensils were of course put out in my DIY football canister!
