College Football Saturday Tailgate: Football Oreo Truffle Pops {Husker Style, of course!}

Wow! Last Saturday was quite a day! It was a BIG game for Nebraska fans–the first Big 10 match-up in Lincoln, against none other but Ohio State. Huge! Coming off the loss we had the week before, we were nervous, but excited for the big game. We were doing a bit of a homegating party at our good friends’ (from college at Nebraska) and I knew I wanted to bring over something fun! Last season, I made football cake pops for a big game and a whole cupcake display. Loved it! 🙂

But, I didn’t have quite as much time and had extra oreos on hand from making the Halloween oreo pops, so I decided to try some football oreo truffles!! They turned out pretty well! 🙂 And, thankfully the game did too! We started playing well, everything was looking good and then we fell behind 21 points. NOT.GOOD. The mood in the house was turning somber, some were talking about going home. Then in the 3rd quarter, we snagged a turnover and things started looking up. We ended up scoring 28 unanswered points to win the game. Biggest comeback in school history!! Go Big Red!!!

I’ve made oreo truffles a few times before, so all the step by step directions can be found there. The ingredients are minimal–oreos, cream cheese, and bark or candy melts (chocolate and white).

Once I had the oreo truffle mixture all creamed together, I shaped small amounts into football shapes. The mixture softens quickly (because of the cream cheese), so once I had the footballs made, they went into the fridge for a bit. Then, comes the chocolate dipping. With the melted chocolate, I started by dipping the end of the stick in the chocolate & then inserting it into the truffle. This helps with stability a bit–here’s what the process looks like from when I made cake pops.

Once you have all your sticks in place (you may need to put them back into the fridge for a bit), coat all the footballs in the chocolate. Once they were dipped, I stuck  them in a brick of styrofoam to harden. Once hard, I used melted white chocolate to pipe on the laces. To make it look more decorative, the styrofoam brick was covered in a cut piece of a black plastic table cloth (the sticks poke right through). Then, I had some extra Nebraska fabric (the same kind I used on the wreath) that I wrapped around the base. And, then, I wound some black ribbon around the sticks and tied on a football ribbon for good measure! 🙂 A fun project for a VERY memorable game!
