With Big Brother at preschool a couple of mornings a week combined with our activities here, we have a constant influx of kid papers and projects. I’ve been trying to figure out a good way to display some of them without going overboard. So, when I had the opportunity to do an Autumn craft for Elmer’s, I of course jumped at the opportunity and decided to combine some house decor with a little solution for our paper problem!

Autumn Sign & Artwork Holder

I started with a whole bunch of Autumn-ish craft supplies and possiblities, but then didn’t end up using it all. So, the picture is of everything I thought I might use. The stickers I got are super cute and I thought I would make it a little “cutesy”, but in the end, I liked the simplicity of just the fall foliage and word, “Autumn”.

Supplies:

– Elmer’s Red Foam Board

– CraftBondâ„¢ Glue Spots Thin-Small

– CraftBondâ„¢ Glue Spots Pop-up Medium

– Hot Glue & Glue Gun

– Various “silk” fall leaves & foliage

– Various sheets of cardstock in fall colors

– wire

– 4 clothespins

– Ribbon

– Glitter Blast spray paint

– X-ACTO knife & scissors

Directions:

First up was spray painting a few of the leaves and clothespins with the Glitter Blast. It worked great and I loved the sparkle!

While those were outside drying, I cut the foam board into a rectangular shape. I had estimated the size I wanted ahead of time (it worked out to be about 1/4 of the board). I used an X-ACTO knife to cut it, but probably should have swapped out the blade. The bottom got a little jagged! But, nothing that a little ribbon can’t cover up! 🙂

Here’s what the rest of the process looked like:

1. Cover top & bottom edges with ribbon (in this case a glittery coppery-orange). To adhere the ribbon to the board, I used the thin Elmer’s Glue Spots and some X-TREME Glue Stick.

2. Attaching foliage to the left & right edges of the board. All the leaves were attached with the Glue Spots. I liked using the Pop-Up variety to give things some depth. Here’s the difference in the Glue Spots:

3. The sunflower was the largest item and a little heavy, so for that I did use some hot glue. I didn’t want to “waste” the Glue Spots on that. Once all the foliage was arranged & attached, I started adding the letters.

4. I used my Cricut to cut out the letters. Since I wanted to use as many fall colors as possible, I cut each letter out in two sizes (4.5″ and 4.25″). So, each letter had a shadow color. To attach the letters together, I used the thin Glue Spots. Then, to attach the letters to the board, I used the Pop-Up Glue Spots to create some dimension.

5. Then, I glued on the clothespins with the back portion of the pin attached to the back of the board (I used a some hot glue for this). And, of course, if you don’t want it to display artwork, photos would be fun too. Or you could just leave the clothespins off entirely!

6. The final step was adding a wire for hanging. Originally, I had planned to do the wire showing, over the whole board like a hanger. But, then decided to just hide it in back. Since it’s not seen, I opted for some high class duct tape to do the trick! 🙂

Then, hang it on the wall! 🙂 See how the letters “pop” just a bit?

The last step is to just decide what to clip on it. I think we’ll be rotating things in & out quite often, but for now we’re displaying some lovely stamped pumpkins, Big Brother’s abstract pumpkin painting, and our handprint family apple tree.

I love it! And, when Big Brother came down from his nap and saw me finishing it up, he exclaimed, “wow, Mom, that’s so pretty! Let’s hang it up!”. Melt my heart! 🙂 I’m thinking that I might see a Christmas-themed one in our future too!
