Wow! The past week has been an absolute whirlwind! Yet, while at BlogHer’11, I was able to have a couple of hours of quiet, wonderful downtime while watching “The Help” at an advanced screening with all my MomMob ladies and the DreamWorks/Disney team! And, I loved every minute!
“From DreamWorksPictures comes the inspiring and poignant drama, “The Help.” Based on the critically acclaimed, No. 1 New York Times best-selling debut novel by Kathryn Stockett, “The Help” boasts an illustrious ensemble cast, including, in alphabetical order, Jessica Chastain, Academy Award® nominee Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Emmy® Award winner Allison Janney, Chris Lowell, Oscar® winner Sissy Spacek, Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone, Academy Award® nominee Cicely Tyson and Mike Vogel. The film is written for the screen and directed by Tate Taylor, with Brunson Green, Chris Columbus and Michael Barnathan producing.
Set in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960s, “The Help” chronicles the relationship between three different and extraordinary women who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk.
A remarkable sisterhood emerges from their improbable alliance, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face to face with the changing times.
My thoughts:
I LOVED it! Really, it was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time! It’s honestly hard to fully put all of my thoughts into words (and no, that’s just not the sheer exhaustion from BlogHer talking)! The movie sent me through a full range of emotions and I found myself laughing and crying throughout! It’s been a long time since I have seen a movie that was so thought-provoking– one that made me think about and reflect on so many topics (from racism & social injustice, to the cattiness of women & how moms interact with their children). But, what makes the movie even that much better is that it’s not just a serious thought-provoking film. There are many moments of lighthearted fun and hilarity. Plus, I found myself connecting with and enjoying many of the characters (and even the ones I really didn’t like….ahem, Hilly, still did a fantastic job). If I had to choose, I think Celia is my favorite! LOVE her!
No matter who your favorite character is though, I think you’ll really enjoy “The Help”! It’s really, really good!
After the screening, the reception was so much fun! Remember when I shared the fun ideas from the “book club kit“? I was SO excited to see those ideas come to life at the event after the screening! Snake Oil Cocktail Company did a GREAT job at making us the character-inspired drinks!
As I had picked in the earlier post, “The Celia” was my favorite! So yummy! Though, I must say, the Minny was a close second! Really good! We received some fun goodie bags at the event also, so here’s the fun news for you…

I definitely want to go see the movie, but will probably have to wait until it hits DVD before I’m able to see it – such are the joys of being a mommy 🙂
