Have you read The Help? I haven’t yet, but so want to. In fact, I’m hoping I can at least start it during our road trip to San Diego next week. While in San Diego for BlogHer’11 next week, I’ll be attending an advanced screening of the film with the Disney/DreamWorks team and I’m super excited! I think the movie looks great and I’ve heard RAVE reviews about the book from just about everyone I know who has read it!

Here’s the movie preview in case you haven’t seen it yet:

With the movie opening in theaters on Wednesday, August 10th, there is just enough time to read the book before seeing the movie. How fun would it be to even get a group of girlfriends together for a ‘The Help’ Book Club or Movie Party?! Well, DreamWorks put together an adorable Book Club Kit so that you can do just that!
How ’bout serving up some southern sweet treats like Pecan Pie, Pineapple Cake, or Cream Cheese Blueberry Pie? Or, some fun drinks inspired by each of the main characters?
The “Skeeter:” Sweet, strong and a little spicy.
Ingredients:

1 oz. José Cuervo’s Platino silver tequila
1/2 oz. Patron Citronge Orange Liqueur
1/2 oz. cranberry juice
1/2 orange, squeezed
2 thin jalapeño slices
The “Aibileen:” Subtle, smooth and strong.
Ingredients:

1/2 oz amaretto
1 1/2 oz Kahlua
1 oz cream
The “Minny:” Strong, with a kick.
Ingredients:

2 oz. Vanilla Vodka
1 oz. Cointreau
2 Dashes Lemon Juice
1 Dash Simple Syrup
The “Hilly:” Sour and chilled, with a sharp twang.
Ingredients:

2 oz apple brandy
1/2 tsp powdered sugar
juice of 1/2 lemons
1/2 slice lemon
1 cherry

The “Celia:” Sugary sweet, a true Southern treat.
Ingredients:

1 oz. Bourbon
1 oz. Rum, light
1 oz. Schnapps, peach
1 oz. Triple Sec
1 oz. Vodka
1 oz. Yukon Jack
1/2 oz. Grenadine

So, which character’s drink sounds most appealing to you? I’m thinking I’d like the “Celia” best! 🙂
The entire kit (courtesy of DreamWorks, which you can download here) has full treat recipes, non-alcoholic drink versions, plus a book club guide with questions.

Have you read the book? Do you plan to see the movie?

  1. They all sound great…maybe in different seasons…Skeeter and Hilly in Fall, Aibileen in winter, Minny in Spring and Celia in Summer.
I read the gook and it’s super excellent! I’d love to see the movie to see how it compares.
Thanks for the great post! I found you through TCB. 🙂
